I have a 68 Mustang GT convertible with a tremec TKO 5-speed and the original speedometer. The original speedometer has been working fine with this combination for many years. This morning I was driving to my office and the speedometer started acting erratically and then it settled down but was reading about 20mph low. How is this possible nothing has been changed, I would think if I lost the gear at the at the end of the cable in the transmission it wouldn't work at all. Is it posible that it could be something in the actual speedometer? Any help as to where to start looking would be appreciated. Thanks

i would start by checking the driven gear on the end of the cable. depending on which one you have, it could be worn enough to be skipping. i think its the 23 tooth version that wears pretty quickly. it would be an easy place to start before tearing into anything else. also check the cable routing & make sure it hasnt melted due to contact with the exhaust. my speedo acted crazy when i first took ownership of the car & the cable had a melted spot.

Yeah that or the speedo cable itself.
