Hood springs

On a 66 fastback one of the 3 nut type things that bolts the hinge to the side apron is stripped. Can you replace the circular part?  It looks like part of the car. To remove the stripped one it looks like you have to make the apron hole bigger to pop it out.

Re: Hood springs

I had to helicoil one of mine. You can get a kit at the auto parts store to repair the threads.

Re: Hood springs

Sounds like the entire insert is spinning in the sheetmetal.  Best fix is to just weld that insert to the inner fender from under the fender  Then use a tap to clean up the threads so it will work properly.

If it's truly stripped and not just spinning like MS suggested, then you can drill and tap it to the next largest size.  Or, you can use a small hole saw and cut it out, weld a new circle of metal back on, drill a hole thru that for the bolt to pass thru, and weld on a new nut.  That's what I did to both sides.
