looking for some info on flowmasters.last summer I changed from longtube heddman header to hedman shorties.the result with flowmaster 40s was a lot more drone in the interior.i like the loud exterior sound of the 40s but the drone is more than I care for.was wondering if anybody had gone from 40s to the delta 40 and what the difference was?

You have tail pipes on that "puppy"?
That seems to be the key on cutting down drone.
Run'em allll the way out the back.

I used to have Flowmaster 50's with 2-1/2" pipes in and 2-1/4" pipes out the back with Hedman headers on a 351W. They were loud when accelerating but could barely hear the exhaust at highway speeds and zero drone.

I'm reminded of my '89 5.0 with Mac shorty headers, catted H-pipe, 2 chamber Flowmasters, and full 2-1/2" exhaust with GT turndowns. It was an odd combo, but it sounded awesome.

I used FM 40 on my 78 El Camino with 383 2.5" exiting just behind the rear wheels. Nice sound no drone.
Used Magna Flo on the 67 Mustang 5.0 exiting just in front of the rear wheels .To quite for my taste, but no drone.

Love the 50 series Flows, they are easy on the ears on drives. Sound great when they need to. Thats what I have in my GTO w/ Poncho 400.

MS- did you have a particular reason for the different tube sizes? Better tailpipe fitment, perhaps? Quieter exit?

I now have 2-1/4 pipes on my race car from the X pipe back. It is a 306 cube, 10.2: 1 compression, Aluminum heads, 1-5/8 primary tube long tube, 600 cfm double pumper set up for road racing. The 2 -1/4 pipes make better torque than the 2 - 1/2 pipes. That means better lap times.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
