Qtr Window/ Qtr Panel Tear Repair

Hey Fellors!

This problematic area is the last area I need to repair as far as metal work is concerned and I have no idea how to go about it bc of the lead used from the factory. Does it all need to come out to start the repair?.  The tear is level with the qtr window sill and horizontal from there for about 2 inches on both sides. On one side it spreads a little bit and looks as if it could be easily welded.  Also in another post a reinforcement was mentioned, how do I go about reinforcing it?

Thanks in advance

Re: Qtr Window/ Qtr Panel Tear Repair

I would make a plate of similar thickness steel, at least 1" wide by a little longer than the length of the crack.  Drill a 1/8" to 3/16" diameter hole every 3/4" along the original qtr panel so you can hold the patch underneath (Magnet) and plug weld the piece to the underside of the panel.  Then weld the crack closed, very small piece at a time to avoid warpage.  Force seam sealer all around the edges of the patch under the quarter skin to keep moisture out.  Prime and paint from below. Then grind the top welds down so it looks like a shiny new quarter panel.  The doubler underneath will then keep it from cracking again.

Money you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted money... unless your wife finds out.
