Ready to rebuild hinges for both doors on the ’65.
Need bushings, pins and springs........any kits out there better than others?
Any recommendations appreciated...........

I used the Scott Drake kit and was sort of disappointed. The new pins they include were soft enough that little buggers of metal rolled up and jammed things up when I pushed the new pins in. I ended up using the new rollers, springs, and hold open detent from the kit and the old pins. Maybe I'm the only one that has had that problem but I was pretty soured.
Taking the hinges apart is not bad once you know the easy way to pull the pins. I wasn't smart enough to figure it out on my own but MS bailed me out. It's sort of long winded to 'splain so I won't unless you don't already know how.
I did make a spring compression tool which I have loaned out to one of the gang here and got decent feed-back. I'll be happy to shoot it to you Josh, if you want.

Thanks BB.....I’ll let you know if I wish to borrow the spring compression tool...or I’ll just eat my spinach
Will probably avoid Drakes products on this project...

Since I had all of the required material I rolled my own using Steve's method.
Simple, effective and surely will out last the car.
You can't go wrong with the Big Kahuna's upgrade kit for 70 bucks if you don't have access to machinery and the raw materials.
I think he also has the bushings if you only want to rebuild the old ones.

That's great and I woulda done it also 'cept it don't work for the 65/66. You can do a bit of drilling to make oiling the early hinges easier, though.

I rebuilt mine on the 65 about 6 or 7 years ago. I used a kit from NPD but added a groove or two to help oil get to where it does some good. I figure the first set lasted nearly 40 years, so I am good for a while.

On the 65-67 cast steel hinges, you can easily drill the side of the main hinge body and tap it for a grease zerk that will let you force feed grease to the bushings without making an external mess. Be sure to lube the roller detent internally before installing it.
Like Bullet said, if you need some advice on getting the old roller pins out easily, just ask.

National Parts Depot has a roller bearing kit with grease (zerk) fittings making the door hinges now easily internally greasable. That's about the best set out there, but it's not cheap at $119. But the kit does all 4 doors. Here's the NPD part number for a 65/66: 22810-3AK

Looks like they tried to copy my hinge rebuild design, but the thing is with the early hinges you don't have to have hollow hinge pins with zerks in them. Just drill and tap the hinge body using the stock hinge rebuild kits and insert a grease zerk in the side at about mid point on the hinge and it will grease it same as if you have the hollow hinge pins. There is nothing "roller" about their hinge kit that I can see. It still uses the thin stock bushings, which are fine on the cast hinges. So instead of their $119 kit with zerks, you can buy the $29 kit plus $4.00 worth of zerks and accomplish the same thing.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
