There's a shop about 45 min away that says they can do the tranny install, clutch replacement, and install the hydraulic clutch kit in a day for (imo) reasonable $800. If it were just the tranny and clutch me and a buddy could do it. But having no knowledge of installing a hydraulic clutch kit and reading that it requires some adjusting to get it right I'm sheepish. Any comments? Advice?

i'm more of a metal fabricator/paint guy & fumble thru alot of mechanical stuff, but i did it myself with no issues. i even built all the brackets for master, slave, pedal attachment linkage & the crossmember myself. only trick is getting the system bled properly & that went easier for me than the brake system. it can easily be done over a weekend if not in one day. i had issues with the used tranny & just swapped it out for another. took about 3 hrs for the swap. do it yourself & save the money...

I tend to agree with Steve,
I have done the 5 speed swap 4 times, all auto to manual, twice with hydraulic and twice with cable. With out a dout the hardest part of the hyd typ is getting it blead, I ended up taking it out as a system and haging it from a ladder to get the air out, but I am sure there are better ways.
The two cable systems were one Modern driveline, and one MustangSteve,
My wife liked the feel of the Hyd, and I liked the feel of the cable, I think the cable gives you a better pedal feel as you are still conected to the linkage. The Hyd felt more like a Honda, but thats just me.
We tend to talk alot about reliability on hear, and the only prolem I had with the Hyd was I lost a slave cylinder, which meant waiting for 4 days for another to arrive. I have had NO issues with the cable systems, and that is where the advantage goes to MustangSteve's because the only wear item (the cable) is a stock off the shelf Mustang cable (No waiting), also I tend to use the belt and suspenders attitude, meaning throw an exrta cable in the trunk and you are good no matter where you are. I would hate to bleed one of the HYD systems in a parking lot somewhere.
Good Luck and do it yourself, even after what ever goes wrong you will be proud of what you accomplish.

REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
