65 mustang spindle question

how can I tell the difference between 6cyl and 8cyl front spindles?   my car has a v8 and 5 lug drums, but I think it was originally a 6cylinder car   ​Thanks

Check the hubs on the front of your Mustang.  If they look like they haven't been redrilled from 4-lug to 5-lug, you have V8 spindles.
V8 hubs won't fit on 6cyl spindles, and vice versa.
More than likely, the PO switched over to V8 spindles/hubs.
You're better off with the V8 pieces; the 6cyl spindles are weaker and could fail with more weight on the front (V8).

When dealing with our 50 year old cars, it is often hard to tell what a previous owner may have done, so you have to do your homework.  If the 5th digit of the VIN for your 65 car is a "T", the car was built as a 6 cylinder car.  If you have an A,C, or K as your 5th VIN digit, it was built as an 8 cylinder car, and would have had the 5 lug hardware up front (and out back).  If you have a T code car, and 5 lug hardware up front, someone has changed something, and you need to know what they have done, if you are thinking about changing something.  Someone may have installed later vintage Granada spindles, etc.  If it were me, I would take off a front wheel, make a CLOSE inspection of the spindles, and write down the Ford part number in the casting of the spindle, and report the number back here (or do a Google search of the part number) and we will help you identify what spindles you have.  There is a lot of knowledge here at FYIFORD, and guys are really willing to give you all the help you need.

If my memory serves me well, the part number is cast in 2 lines on the engine side of the vertical part of the spindle, between the upper & lower ball joints.  It will probably be hard to read due to 50 years of exposure to the elements, but get what you can.

rocklord correctly states that the V8 spindles are beefier, and JKB has posted a picture of the 65/66 V8 spindles (with hubs) he is selling in the Swap Meet section of the forum, if you want a pic for comparison/reference.

To add to what TimC said, a casting # of C5DA-3107B and CSDA-3108B indicates V-8 spindles (3107B is passenger side/3108B is driver side spindle)
Should you have other questions regarding ford casting numbers etc, mustangtek.com is a great source.
Sometimes those casting numbers are difficult to see even after you’ve cleaned the spindle.  Spray some WD-40 or another liquid of the casting number and shine a bright light on it to read the number.  
Post what you find and we’ll help you determine what spindles you have.........

Thanks for the responses I really appreciate the help.  This car has been a labor of love for about 7yrs and is finally nearing paint.  I'm getting to the point of doing the brakes and need to order the mustang steve front kit no, and wanted to verify spindles.  I'll get the numbers and check back.

You can’t go wrong with Steve’s kit......I have it on my coupe.

BTW: if you look in “Tips and how to” section of this forum, on the first page, Ramses has a nice write up installing the cobra front brake set up.  Good information for you.......

I cant find my part number on the mustang tech page.  my drivers spindle is  C5DA-3107A  I can find B and C but not an A

The spindles above are 67-69 V8 spindles.  Same were used on I-6 and V-8 cars.  They were used for drum and disc brakes in 1967 and drum brakes only in 68-69.  Note the vertical sides of the part around the 4-bolt pattern are inset.  The 67-69 spindles use A2 and A6 bearing sets.
The 70-73 drum brake spindles appear identical but have a larger diameter axle, using A12 and A13 bearings.


The spindles in the above pic are 64-1/2 to 66 Mustang V8 spindles used with five lug drum and disc brakes.  Note the sides of the part around the 4-bolt pattern are straight.  They use A2 and A6 bearings.




64-1/2 to 66 Mustang I-6 spindles are similar but have a smaller diameter axle and the radius arm is straighter without as much downward offset.


Money you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted money... unless your wife finds out.
