Hi all!
last weekend I've just installed a Borgeson conversion kit on my 66 coupe (I've discribed my ride in a presentation topic) with manual transmission.
1st problem :
the shaft was pulled out from the rag joint spines.
I took it out to make a decent flat spot on the splines where the tiny M6 locking screw goes, it seems to have kind of solve the problem.
I have seen the bearing solution that Mustang Steeve proposes : I love it and I want to buy it.
2nd problem :
I don't like the rag joint.
I found on Borgeson's site some "Vibration Reducer U-Joint". I like this solution better and I would like to install one of these.
leading me to 2 questions:
A- Do you guys have an idea of the dimension of the shaft and splines that are on the borgeson steering box ? (I'm using the car every day and I don't want to take the rag joint out to measure it)
B- If I install this U joint with vibration reducer, I will end up with 1,5 inch extra lenght on the steering shaft... how can I do? can I cut and weld my shaft?
Thanks,
Julien

hi julien i had the same problem with my installation on my 66 coupe.my rag joint actually ripped apart(luckily it happened in the body shop)borgeson replaced it with a ujoint and 2000 miles with no problems.the spring under the steering wheel is always pulling on the shaft.ms"s bearing in the column is the way to go as it will hold the shaft in place.borgeson is aware of this problem on the 64-66 kit.they sent out the ujoint at no cost.i didn't have to cut my shaft when installing the ujoint.

Nice!
that's great news!
How did you contact them?
I sent them a message thru their site yesturday morning but no answer at the moment.
what did they send you? a simple "U-joint" or a "vibration reduction U-joint"?
If just a simple U-joint, don't you have more vibration in the steering wheel?

I found a phone number on the www.can't remember where thou.it was a ujoint with spline on both ends with a joint in the middle and a set screw.never drove the car with the rag joint on the road so no way to compare but I have no vibration in my steering wheel.the joint the sent me takes the place of the rag joint, that with
ms's bearing is the way to go.

Thanks a lot for your help guys!
my U-joint is on its way and I'm in contact with Steeve to order my bearing kit. Hopefully my problem will soon be forgotten.
Another point : As my car has a manual gearbox I have also installed a Z-bar from Borgeson. Problem is that is hits my header (3Y long) when clutch is released (when I don't push the pedal)
It works but I can't set the sliping point exactly how I like it.
Shall I try to modify the Z-bar?
Shall I use another type of headers?
Shall I go for clutch cable conversion? if yes, which one?

I had the steering shaft come out of the rag joint while on the freeway. I had a small fender bender and only walked away with a bent rim.
I ended up drilling the shaft for the set screw and using locktite red on it. I have put over 11,000 miles on my car with the borgeson box and I haven't had any issues with the rag joint itself.

Borgeson also has a thick hard plastic piece with a lip that fits into the base of the steering column that the collar of the rag joint rides against to keep the shaft from pulling up in the column. Thought they included this piece in the kits now. I've got the u-joint and the MustangSteve bearing though which both work great.

Next episode coming soon when I'll install a U-joint and Steeve's bearing.

Bearing installed !
Thanks Steeve, that was quick.
I must admit that I feel way better now that my shaft doesn't move anymore.
This week I'll receive the U-joint to get rid of the rag and finish properly the install.

I hope that U-joint works for you but the one I tried was too long and I had to go with a rag joint.

hey very cool to read this. I ordered my Borgeson Assembly three days ago. with the disc brake setup, suspension this was another upgrade I wanted to do
How much of the steering column tube did you have to cut?
I was going to go with MS's second bearing too! that is going to be awesome!
Rag joint vs U joint.. want to find out what is the better one. Obviously have the rag joint coming for now as a part of the conversion kit .
Ohh another question!!!! What about the power steering hoses? Did you use ford type pump? If so were the lines long enough
Heard that with the borgeson pump the lines were too short ... I am so glad someone just installed this so I can may be pick you brain.

About column cut : no idea... the only thing I can tell you is to use a water hose clamp to make sure you cut it strait if like me you're using a hand saw.
About hoses: I've also read that they where too short. The ones I received where great. No problem on this side.
About the rag-joint VS U-joint: actualy I'm driving with MS bearing and still the raj joint. As there is no more pulling effort on the raj-joint it does its job properly now.
I have just received my u-joint but didn't have time to install it yet.
Now I would say that the rag joint is not a really bad idea IF YOU HAVE MS BEARING.
;-)
I didn't bring it to the alignment shop yet to correct the caster at Borgesons specs and I've been driving it for 2 weeks and I really like it. I wonder how I could get any pleasure with this car with the original steering box! and the 14:1 ratio is just amazing!

was it caster or camber that needed to be changed? anyway...
I am glad to hear! cause I was going to install the Second bearing too! makes sense that there is no pull on the rag joint with a second bearing support
All that to say , I am re-doing EVERYTHING on the suspension, and steering and brakes in the front.. so mine will not drive till it can go to an alignment shop.
