I now have a retro fitted clutch pedal and roller bearing kit. Undecided as to which clutch system to go with. I don't have any headers yet so, shortys could be used for clearance if necessary. And price IS a factor. No Z bar either. it's a T5/306. Leaning towards the Modern Driveline cable setup for cost and easy installation. My Ranger has a homemade hyd setup and I HATED bleeding that master cyl!

There's not a lot of options out there for 69 Mustang for clutch cables. I've heard though the grapevine the Modern Driveline Cable setup is not the greatest. Im using my Z bar set up with Heim Joints on the top and bottom and it works quite well with no bind. Steve69

I had both, started out with the cable. It was ok just barely disengaged.
Then I installed headers and cable was close and I thought I had it protected...guess not melted inside.
Then put in MDL hydraulic set up. Should have went for this if first place. Smoother, less effort and better disengagement. So in the end it cost me more, should have just spent the extra $ in the begining

The Modern Driveline cable setup sucks. I bought it initially, and completely unimpressed with both the fit and design sought out Mustang Steve and chose to run his setup instead, which is better designed with better fitment. If you go with cable actuation its the only way to fly.
As for the clutch, the FRPP King Cobra is a great budget street and light strip clutch for an NA 302 based engine spinning 6,500RPM or less.

I could be wrong but I don't think MS has a cable kit for 69-70. Some thing about clearance to the bottom of the cowl

Your right! That's where I would of went first.

In that case I'd bite the bullet and just go hydraulic.

I'm running a cable setup in my 69 Cougar 351W, T5, and headers. I've been running this setup since 1997. Never melted the cable. Had to massage the cowl a little bit (not much). I'm a fan of cable setups. I also have one in my 65 Ranchero 302, T5.

Did you use one of MS's kits? If so which one?

Any pics?

No. It was made by D.B. Performance Engineering. Not sure if they are still around or not. I made my own for the Ranchero using an aluminum quadrant, firewall adjuster, and cable from a 1990 mustang GT.

I probably took pics a long time ago. Not sure where they are now. Now that I think about it, I think the cowl massaging was on the Ranchero and the Cougar fit without any massaging. I will see if I have any pics of the one I made.
Here is a link I found of the DB Performance setup from 1998.

The DB performance setup has that little clevis at the top like the MDL cable setup. Look at how much wear the 3/8" thick stock clutch rod sees. A 3/16" pin is waiting to wear quickly if a 3/8" rod can wear more than half way through.
The beauty of the MS kit is no wear points at the cable ends. The cable simply wraps around the quadrant, keeping a constant pull radius.
I do not have one for 69-70. Maybe someday will get the idea that is in my head down on paper to make a prototype. Frankie, I did not see mention of what year car you have.

I agree MS. That's why I made a quadrant type for my ranchero. But the DB performance style has held up well for almost 20 yrs now.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
