Is there much of a difference between a ford tooling dash pad and the aftermarket offered in mustangs unlimited? which would you recommend

I didn't know an original Ford tooling dash pad was available!!
After market worked good for me.

Me I'd rather buy a part that's 10 times as much then going threw mustangs unlimited. I hate their company for their horrible customer service.

CJ's pony has free shipping! There prices are right inline with everyone else.

The pads from original Ford tooling look like factory stockers, fit without modification, and may last longer. The only problem I have had with Mustangs Unlimited is their user unfriendly web site and slow shipping, typically 8 or 9 days. They may have the widest selection of old Mustang parts.

Yes! Big diff, go Ford tooling. I think I got mine from Steve's Mustang Parts. Good service and keepin' it in the family, so to speak.

Not sure it is relevant today, but I bought the dash pad for my 65 from Mustangs Unlimited about 15 years ago, it is not OEM, and the fit is fine.

Think we need a clarification here: there haven't been any OEM dash pads for 65-66 Mustangs for a very long time. The dash pads advertised as "using Ford tooling" are aftermarket, but they are using the molds and machinery used to make the Ford parts. Ford authorized selling the molds and machinery when their accountants told them it was no longer economical to make those dash pads as replacement parts. I doubt that Ford actually made the dash pads in house, the actual manufacturer was probably one or more of their many suppliers. When I worked for Goodyear-Akron 68-70, we made dash pads, but I don't remember what cars they were for.

Flip side of coin.... Although there was a snafu last time with MU ( mainly the good old USPS) their cuss service made everything right with me volunteerily . Went out-of-their-way to make ole Sal happy!
I guess its who answers on the other end of the phone.
Steve's Mustang Parts is who I prefer butt......if its a small item,"the other guys" free shipping make the dif. (Ex). hate buying a $3.00 part and pay $10.00 shipping!

I bought mine from either Mustangs Unlimited or Branda (can't remember which it was exactly). I've always had good service from Mustangs Unlimited. Sure, I've gotten some crummy quality stuff from them, but that's the nature of the aftermarket resto parts industry. They've always taken the stuff back with no problems when I wasn't happy.
Now the dash pad was a urethane product, not a Ford tooling, and I'll admit I was skeptical as I had a horrific experience with a urethane dash pad for my K5 years ago. I have to say, it fit just fine and looks a million times better than my falling apart, dyed three times, sticky, gross factory pad.

I have used mustang unlimited from the 70s till now, they've come a long way. Since I'm on the east cost, I use Connecticut, the go to guy there is Kevin, very knowledgeable. Georgia is the other store. There are so many vendors, makes your spin.National Parts Depot is also very good. They carry a lot of the many mid year change stuff too.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
