fuel pump

Took my 67 coupe out last night to go to a cruise. Got 1-1/2 miles from home and it just died. Would not even fire. Narrowed down to the fuel pump. Put a new one on and it still will not run. Will run with a temporary tank from beyond the pump to the carburetor. Primed the pump and still no go. Is it possible for the eccentric in the motor to go bad? It is an 85 302 from a truck. I tried a temporary tank right on the fender leading to the fuel pump and it will not pump even into a bottle.
Any suggestions?

Re: fuel pump

The cam bolt may have backed out allowing the eccentric to loosen.

Re: fuel pump

You have done the correct stuff to isolate the problem. Kudos on the methodical testing.

You can see the eccentric though the hole where the fuel pump bolts on, using a mirror and flashlight. Since it is a new fuel pump, it might be worth trying another pump.

Was the engne from a carbureted truck?  If not, the eccentric addition might be suspect. There are several ways to incorrectly install it and only two right ways, depending on the type of eccentric added.

Re: fuel pump

I am purty sure it is the eccentric. I took off the new pump and looked in the hole. I can take a stick and rattle it off the front of the timing cover. Don't know if it was a carbureted engine or not. PO had installed the engine. I can feel the WYAIT  monster again. Do I fix this or just put in the EFI roller motor I have sitting in the corner?

Re: fuel pump

If you can 'rattle' the eccentric, either the bolt backed out or something broke.  The eccentric should be firmly in place.  You'll need to remove the TC cover to fix.

Re: fuel pump

It will rattle a little bit if it is a 2 piece eccentric. There are one piece and two piece units. If it is moving forward and back alot then yea the bolt probably is backing out. If it moves like an 1/8 or less it's probably just a 2 piece design.

Re: fuel pump

Is the pump arm under the eccentric? I once installed a pump incorrectly and had the same symptoms.

Re: fuel pump

My friend just when through this with his 64 Falcon, 260.  It had a fresh engine when he bought it and ran great.  Then the FP quit and installing a new one didn't help.  After a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth he pulled the front cover only to discover that the eccentric was flopping around.  He put it back together and torqued the bolt with a little loc-tite and a few miles later it was doing the same thing....loose cam bolt.  This time a closer look revealed that the last engine builder used a slightly long cam bolt which was bottoming.  He ground off about three threads and all is well.

Re: fuel pump

Houston, I have found the problem.
Bolt was backed all the way out. Now I need to find a new eccentric. This one was stamped and the little tab is busted off.  Friend says he has some, but they are in engines and I will need to take one apart to get it. I think he just wants the timing covers taken off. Anybody know what torque the bolt should be when I put it back together?

Re: fuel pump

40 ft pds use some thread locker

Re: fuel pump

Be sure you have the correct forged washer. It is really thick and will not bend  Use of a thinner stamped steel washer just about guarantees another failure. I have never used thread locker and have never had a failure. If mine comes loose on the Million Dollar highway, it's Josh's fault.

Re: fuel pump

I am sure I have the correct washer. It is about 3/16 to 1/4" thick. I am assuming I will need to get the two piece stamped eccentric to replace this one. Tore one out of a motor tonight but it was a single piece that needed the dowel through it.
I only have about 1/4" deep hole that the tab will fit in.

Re: fuel pump

Be sure your timing sprocket has the raised surface under the eccentric so it allows the outer ring to spin freely.  1/4" deep hole sounds about right for the two-piece eccentric.
