Refurbish or aftermarket

I have these hood inserts for may 66 Fairlane. I was wondering if they can be refurbished. If so can anyone recommend a good place to get them done. Or maybe a good aftermarket replacement.

Re: Refurbish or aftermarket

Walt I really believe in restoring any part you can.  So much of the repop stuff is just plain junk.  I would go some Google work and I'll bet you can find someone that will re-anodize those and maybe so the complete restoration.  Lots of hits under "aluminum auto trim restoration".

Re: Refurbish or aftermarket

There is a chrome plating business in StL that used to specialize in restoring and rechroming pot metal.  It involves stripping it down, and then grinding out the abcesses much like a dentist, and then soldering and smoothing before the replating.  Do those inserts come out?  If they don't, it seems it would take a special, special artist to be able to refurb them.  He said It wouldnt be cheap, because of all the labor involved.  They quoted me 325 to do my Galaxie front bumper, but its been a while ago.  I had also talked to him about doing my quarter pillar mouldings, and thats when he explained the process.  He told me I would probably be much better off finding a used set somewhere.   Which is what I eventually did.  I have two nice sets I got off ebay real cheap, because those pillar mouldings were specific to 4 door hardtops.    Ive spent years searching for better rear windows w/ no luck. Those lower frames are the same type of potish metal that bubbles.  IF the car were a two door, or used to belong to George Jones or something, Id most likely have those window frames repaired.

If multiple things can go wrong, the one that will go wrong will be the one that causes the most damage.

Re: Refurbish or aftermarket

Greg those inserts look to be soldered in or something, so they should come out. I'm found a few places searching as BB suggested. I'll send some pics and see if they can give me a rough estimate. See where it goes from there.

Re: Refurbish or aftermarket

I don't think you're going to find a reproduction of those. Refurb is the only option - and I would guess you're talking big bucks. I priced having mine done about 20 years ago, and the chrome place wanted $220.00 each to plate them.

Yea Kevin, I haven't found any repos, I sent out a few feelers to get an estimate. I really like this style hood but don't think I want to go over 500. I have 2 other hoods that came with the car without the cut outs. I really wanted to go with this because I am keeping the rest of the car simple. Not much flash.
