yesterday I pulled the 65 coupe in the garage and took out the interior. I am updating the stereo system. When I got the car running a few years back,I just stuck in the AM radio to fill the hole and waited for the day to upgrade. So new speakers , amp, head unit (no I'm not cutting the dash up), sound deadener, and a new carpet kit.
I am also going to fix the wiring, the wipers and the heater motor doesn't work. the biggest thing is taking the load off of the main wire going in to the Cab (I can't remember the number) and getting some flexibility into the fuse block. I have done a lot of upgrading like putting relays for the lights and for the electric fan. Also looking into putting the Battery in the trunk....down the Rabbit hole I go....Bullet Bob I might be giving you a call if I run into any issues. Pics will follow with my progress

Sounds like a fun project. Should bring my plenty of enjoyment after the frustration has run its course.

so far I'm just about completed with the matting. looking under the dash .....well the PO did work some special magic. I'll be spending the weekend untangling wires and figuring it out. then I'll tackle the ol 37 wire.
Offline
How many times have you looked under the dash and wondered "what were they thinking??"
Offline
This is certainly the time to work under the dash while the seats are out!

Ya that's what I was thinking.

I'm interested to hear what you do with the stereo unit. I know there are some head units out there that look relatively stock but are cd/ bluetooth. I think Dennis Gage from My Classic Car advertises something along those lines on tv.

After some time with schematics and some head scratching I got the gauge wires in a better arrangement. I went to radio shack and got a 12 pin connector. All the dash wires now go thru the plug I left it a bit long so it would be easier for connection. with the 12 pin plug It gives room for expansion. I do not have the AMP gauge hooked up due to wanting to put a volt gauge in. Bullet Bob showed me what he did and I will most likely go that route, just got to get the gauge. As for a stereo I'm using the custom sound USA 230. I put one in the convertible and liked it. It is basically a media player. I can hook up my phone and listen to my music. I will be running a 4 channel amp and upgrading the speakers. 61/2 in the kick panels with tweeters in the 4x6 dash opening the 61/2 and a tweeters in the package and a small sub to fill in the lower sound. here re some pics of what I did with the Gauges

If you make that harness from the cluster long enough, you can set the cluster on top of the dash while it's connected. I learned this from Glens 65 5.0 and it's pretty handy at times.

Well I did think about making it longer hmm we will see. Getting it in and out easyer was the main focus. I havn't plugged it in yet maybe tonight.

BB- from bearcat's response ... "I do not have the AMP gauge hooked up due to wanting to put a volt gauge in. Bullet Bob showed me what he did and I will most likely go that route, just got to get the gauge."
What did you do to install a voltmeter?

I found a top-swing volt meter. SunPro, I think.
Then my son hammered it to shape, filed it to fit, and painted it to match and managed to mount it in place of the old Amp meter. I made a dial face overlay for it that was close to the original gage font and design then made overlays for the FUEL, TEMP, OIL gauges using the same font. I made the overlays in Power Point and reverse printed them (to get white on black) on Avery full sheet label stock. We applied the overlays and hit them with a light coat of clear acrylic spray to protect them. Then I used a day-glow orange paint pen to coat all the gauge pointers (slip a little piece of cardboard under the pointers when doing this) and everything has been working fine now for eight or nine years.
Source for the VM comes from the Ign. Switch power source to the CVR.
I also swapped the position of the Temp and Fuel gauges. I'm an instrument glancer and it made no sense to have to scan the whole cluster to see the two that are important.
Sorry for the poor photo.
Hope this helps,
BB

So Mister BB. I have been looking for a volt meter like that for a long time. You just told us where to get them. Now what are you going to charge for those overlays? Of course with out the nice "Jean's" logo!
Thank's
Steve

If I saved the PPT file, and IF I can find it...I'll gladly give it to anyone who wants it. Butt (TS&T), that's a big IF!
I'll let you know, Steve.

Since I'm fighting a miserable cold and didn't feel like going to a car show 20 miles away today, I'm just lazing around so I went looking for that file. Well, I know I've had at least one comp failure since I did it and so far, I haven't found it. However, Power Point is very easy to lay graphics out and if you have stock gauges that you can take some measurements from, you should be able to layout the gradient marks close enough. All the gauges use the same five-mark gradient spread so it really isn't too difficult.
I'm going to see if I can get something off of my old laptop hard drive but I'm not too encouraged.
Let ya know.

Well BB if you find that file... I ordered that gauge and well..... down farther down the rabbit hole..

You could look in to putting a 80 ford truck fuse block or 80s Gm fuse block. Either unit can be easily adapted. And then you would have endless options on add ons to the car. The Gm type fuse block is what painless units use in their kits.
This will tell you on how to wire up a newer fuse block.

BobE:
I'm trying to recall how I got started. I may have pulled a stock dial face and scanned it. And even if I didn't do that it might be a good idea. Then you could import that JPG into power point for a starting point. If you have an old stock gauge...doesn't matter which one...maybe you could see if the dial face is removable. I seem to think it is.
Something to think about.

BB, got the guage ordered. Been messing with power point. Smart A@% son sits down beside me and says "Whatcha doin"? I am trying to draw the face of a guage. He says why don't you do it the easy way? Aaaah I have no idea was my answer. Since it takes a long time to figure out power point, you should be using PAINT he says. So I tried it. Took me 20 minutes to create a good looking face. Now I am going to remove that dash panel and do some measuring and get the dems correct. KIDS!!!!!!

Good! Glad you figured it out. I think I used PPT cause it was handy. Paint? Why not.

BulletBob's volt gauge is pretty cool and very creative, but if you just want a simple bolt-in solution check out this guy...He converts Mustang amp gauges into volt gauges.

That's a neat solution, Michael. And the price is certainly fair.

The WYAIT bug got me. good time to put in the A/C. So I ordered a system from Vintage air.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
