On my local Craigslist, someone is selling a T5z that is brand new and never installed in a vehicle, but it has been sitting on a shelf for 8 years. Any concerns with a T5 sitting that long? Any seals that should be replaced before running it? I don't know whether it's been stored dry or full of fluid.

Look before you leap. You don't want to end up with something for a 4 cyl car. How far is the trans from your house? Try to look at it. At least try to get a photo. If you can see it, look at the innards.
Assuming the gears are not rusted from time, you should be ok. I don't know specifics, so, you need some other dimensions and post them here. Length & diameter of input shaft. Number of splines on input shaft. First gear ratio. And mounting bolt hole configuration. Remember these transmissions came in any number of Ford and GM cars, many with their own configuration. Some were on 6 cyl engines that you may not want for strength and gear ratios
I think the preferred 1st gear should be around 2.95:1. 3.35:1 works too, but is not as desirable. Anything else might not fit.
A few months ago Ultrastang had a complete listing of them all. You might search back thru the posts to find it.

Here's the Craigslist ad with the specifics. Bought new from Modern Driveline.

I would just call modern driveline. They will know how the trans was assembled. Bearings greased, etc. I'm sure it's fine though....

The ID tag 1352-251 does correspond to an aftermarket T5, which is what Modern Driveline would be selling I imagine. I've had engines sitting longer than 8 years which fired up and ran fine. If it spins freely, you can run it through the gears, and it truly looks unused, it seems like a pretty good buy to me.

* This is part number that can be found only on the aluminum tag, bolted to the extension housing. Each part on the trans has a similiar part # but that is for that specific part, it will not help you to id transmission.

As far as the trans being okay from sitting I would say that so long as it was inside it should be fine. Seals, etc. in an unused trans aren't going to be bad just from sitting, plus a T5 really only has two seals, one on either end. Everything else is RTV. If it wasn't installed ever then it should never have had fluid in it.
They're pretty easy to tell if they are for a V8 or 4 cylinder too. Google the input shaft to see the difference and that will tell you what its for. You can check the countershaft bearing cup (as seen on the front face of the trans) to verify that its a WC. But honestly, if it looks brand new then its a Z spec T5 because they haven't built anything else in over a decade. The odds that this guy has an NOS T5 from back in the day are about nil.

Thanks, guys. I will see if I can take a look at it this week.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
