It is very difficult to get down into those drains. I know because I grew up about 2 miles from The River. LA River to everyone else. There are gates with big locks on them. Try as we might, we could never get thru them. There were also storm drains that were 15ft tunnels emptying into The River. We used to hike miles up them just for the fun of it. Ah... Memories.
You notice that the car never really got into the water. That is because there is a 2ft deep channel under it. That beautiful car would have looked funny up to its fender tops in water.
Also, the bridge is used just as much as the river. It is the 1st Bridge.

When I wuz a wee tot, maybe 13 ish...we did get into the River on our bikes a few times. Also had lesser channel...also concrete...that ran through Compton, not far from my house that we rode in all the time.
Never got into the River with a car though.

Man I know where you were. Things were a little different then. I grew up in Compton and we used to ride our bikes from Compton to Maywood where my cousin lived. Right up Atlantic Ave. Also used to ride to Newport Dunes....never thought a thing about it.

Well she was smart enough not to smoke in that beautiful car! But she was stupid enough to smoke while swinging on a gas pump!!!
Did you notice that thru all that water the car was still clean!!

Didn't know there were so many who grew up around me. I spent my youth in South Gate after being born in Compton. The river was a great place to play.

Ya know, Steve....it's just possible that we jockeyed for the same parking spot at Harvey's.

Could be. You could find me there most every Friday or Saturday night. There were a lot of cool cars there. I have never forgotten the guy with a brand new 56 or 57 Caddy. He put in a 39 La Salle trans with a 3' floor shifter (all the rage at that time) Everyone was very jealous of him since we could seldom collect more than a couple of dollars between me and my friends.

My best friend worked at Canada Dry after high school and bought a 1965 black Mustang 289 4 speed. We would be at Harvey's every weekend. We went to high school with John Force who rode with us when he could.

John was quite the motor mouth back then just like now. We all street raced in the factory areas of LA and John was one of the worst. Guess he gets the last laugh on that now !!!

In fairness he was only 16 or 17 at the time. He didn't have enough experience and was not very good. Almost got me killed one night behind Harvey's racing a Mustang in a residential area (against my very vocal objection). We ended up jumping a curb through a fence and stopping in some one's front yard.

REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
