Some of these remind me of Tim Dorsey's books about Florida starring Serge Storms.  One time Serge was being chased by mobsters and his car was shot full of bullet holes.  Serge knew he had to hide out in the open so he covered up the real bullet holes with decals of bullet holes.  Genius.
