which way does the shift linkage go up or down on the side of the transmission case for using the stock shifter ?
in a 65 coupe.

Up...park is all the way to the rear on the trans. They make a selector shaft for the trans that will use the stock shifter. I calculated ratios, measured arcs, modified the shifter, made a special linkage rod and saved the $100 or so they wanted for the selector shaft...only took me three or four days.

This is how I did mine, I used the stock rod, cut it off, drilled and tapped put on a swivel link for adjustments.
This is with the floor shifter

I made one with parts from a donor AOD Fox Mustang shifter. It used the factory cable from the Fox AOD transmission.
Donor parts harvested from the Fox shifter
Attaching shifter bracket to 65 shifter. Note witness mark arrow to show where the center of the shaft was on the Fox shifter.
Attaching shift lever from Fox cable shifter to the 65 shifter lever.
Final product. Make darn sure the entire lower contraption will fit through the shifter hole in the floor. Don's ask how I know that.
You can grind the indexing slots and even revise their position to match the AOD detent points, but all I did was make sure the D position and P position were correct. Everythign else worked out. If you grind the steps to add new positions, you can also lengthen the detent lock that is operated by the shifter button by either loosening the cable adjustment or welding up that lock blade a bit.

MS's cable shifter is the V Best way to go !!
I tried several solid rod types and was never satisfied.
I now use cable shift on both 4R70W equipt 65 2+2 and 73 Vert. Mo Bettah!!

My attempt at a cable mount. Came from the donor 95. It bolts to the four bolts that hold the shifter assembly to the tunnel. It looked just like Steve's Fox body part, you can see the remnants of the original holes after trimming.
It shifted great, my problem was the 95 cable is 5' long, way too much excess to shove in the tunnel.
Steve, Corky, do you recall the lengths of the cables you're using?
A bonus of using a cable on an AODE/4R70W, is that you leave the arm facing down and dont have to worry bout relocating the DTR.

Ditto what MS did. My donor AOD came with shifter and cable, so I modified it like MS showed. Many thousand miles with no problems.
