I'm going to make a trunk enclosure for my 65 coupe. I was wondering if anyone here has made one. I would love to see some pictures and I'm open to suggestions on the enclosure.

Are you talking about finishing out the trunk?? I did but I dont have pictures but I can take some
Offline
Yeah finishing it out. I've seen people use some mdf of similar and enclose the trunk sides and in the back of the seat. I am planning on doing this to my car and use black carbon fiber upholstery to match the rest of my interior. But I was also hoping to see some people's cars for ideas.

I did........butt no pics(yet)
I used luan/floor underlayment. Cuts pretty EZ with a jig saw. I covered mine with black carpet material. The blk hides a lot of mistakes butt also show every tiny speck of white trash in the world.
One nice + to the finished trunk is....(my wife loves to make fun of this!)..it also seals up the interior a little and makes it quiet-er. Her big "bi+ch is......you do stuff to the engine and exhaust to make it noisey then try to make it quiet-er in the car!! Really does help with some tire/road noise if the trunk is carpeted.

You know, I thought about finishing my trunk out and quickly scrapped that idea once I saw how much space I would lose if I did so. Since I spend a lot of time road tripping / camping out of my car, space is at a premium and I'd probably rip up a nice finished trunk anyways.
With my "unfinished" trunk, the left wheelwell holds all of my detailing products, an extra fuel pump, some jumper cables, an electric ratchet doodad I have, and my car show books; the right wheelwell holds spare hoses, 3 quarts of oil, a gallon of coolant, a quart of power steering fluid, a belt tensioner, and some brake fluid.
With a finished trunk, all of that crap would actually be highly visible floating around in the box that I had created! Don't need people knowing how much crap I actually carry around "just in case"...

Because of the loss of space with a bunch of upholstered plywood all I did was repaint the trunk interior and custom make a cut pile floor mat.

Fortunately for me, my friend owns an upholstery shop here in my hometown. He used plywood, some fiberglass, vinyl sides and back, and the bottom is carpet. It's really clean work, and there are no fasteners showing. As was mentioned before, a lot of trunk space was sacrificed, but I didn't mind that. Now we're working on back lighting the cobra emblem, and using a switch that turns on the light whenever the trunk opens.

I think doing some type of finishing or pads is a great idea, a car buddy of mine had one of those wild hairs we all get from time to time when leaving a cruise-in and got a little squirly going into second and the one of the folding/collapsing chairs in his trunk put a real nice dent in his quarter panel. Its a beautiful 66 Fastback, dark blue and you can see the dent from a mile.

Kelly, I like your response. That is the difference between those who drive their cars and those who just look at their cars! I have nothing against a finished out trunk. I have seen some really nice ones, as evidenced by the pictures. But a lot of functionality is totally gone once the trunk gets turned into an upholstered footlocker.
This one comes under the "Your car - do what you like with it" theme.
Mine is done like original, but I would not be against it being at least carpeted - without giving up any room, of course.

Yep, loss of space is a given when you finish out the trunk. Suppose I'll have to put the golf clubs in the passenger seat. I could've gone stock, but my kid wanted to build it.

Cool thanks for the suggestions. I wasn't really planning on making mine to fancy. I was just looking to give mine that custom look. Plus the way I've sorta decided to do it I don't think I'll loose a bunch of space. Like the above post id hat to put something in the trunk forget about it and then end up with a dent. With my luck , that would happen right after I paint my car.

I forgot to mention, on mine the "sides" aren't screwed in, so I can pull the sides out and store whatever in the wheel wells. The loss of space with mine is the back, but I suppose that's not a big deal, I can always flip down the back seat and put stuff behind there. And as Kelly and MS said, I don't really drive my car like some of yall. Also, I could remove both sides and the back pretty easily, and have only lost an inch or 2 of depth, due to the new wooden carpeted bottom.

Neat that's pretty much how I was thinking of building mine. As for right now I still have my radiator in the stock location on my 65. But I may move the battery in the future when I upgrade to a bigger radiator.

Once I decided to relocate the battery to the trunk, I realized the trunk's use as storage for my clubs was compromised greatly. So putting some stereo equipment and partitions in didn't matter too much at that point. I can still fit a suitcase in there, and since it's carpeted I could just lay the clothing in the a dresser drawer. the trunk and back seat should provide plenty 'O room. All three of my panels are also of the pull out type w/o screws.

I thought I'd share a few more pics of my buddy's work

The first picture is obviously a "before", and the last is exactly like mine. I love the way the Ford emblem is raised, my Cobra is the same way, just hard to tell from my pics.

I will add in a second note - to avoid the issue of getting dents in your quarters from heavy stuff flying into the sides of the trunk, stuffing a BUNCH of stuff in the wheelwells also works wonderfully ;) All the stuff that's packed in mine is a very nice buffer to keep the heavy stuff I carry around (including but not limited to rock hammers, very large rocks, intakes, headers, sway bars, and grills) from going straight through the quarter.

This forum is so neat, I don't think that any other forum would have the information like this one does. I appreciate all the replies to my first post.

Whatever happened to putting trunk batteries in sealed battery boxes vented outside the car?

It depends on the battery. The old style battery still needs to be vented. Optima sealed type don't need vented.

Had that happen to a friend of mine back in high school. Put a nice dent in the quarter from the inside while doing a side ways burn out. Tough one to explain to mom.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
