Re: epas

Hi oldracer

I have a 63 fairlane that I planned on installing the vue epas into. The pedal bracket is an issue. it bolts to the fire wall and the front of the dash. The steering shaft travels pretty much through the whole "U" shape of the bracket.

After much measuring and mocking up... i found that the pedal bracket did not allow enough room for the vue epas unit to fit.
unless your willing to do some surgery and fab work on that pedal bracket, the vue unit isnt a viable unit for the early fairlane IMHO. Other units that may possibly work is the yaris, scion or prius units. They are small in diameter and the yaris assist motor is on the passenger side.

Re: epas

thanks for the info.I  have tried rack and pinion  with no luck. The 62 frame is different than the 63.Can not mount the rack low enough  to eliminate bump steer.I  do not want the original power steering set up,so i guess I will keep it the way it is.

Re: epas

What about going with a Borgeson box?

Re: epas

Here's a possible.....Convert what you have to manual steer. Do the Shelby drop.....roller pitman arm and roller idler arm should  decrease effort a BUNCH. Check the Daze web page for the  correct alignment numbers for todays tires(NOT the 60's bias tires!) Resist the urge to run  mega wide front tires and top off the grease in the steering box.
Should be able to "one-hand" it everywhere butt parallel parking. (does anybody still do that?!)

Re: epas

tried to find the links for the alternative p/s solutions i had for the fairlane...some are now dead. bummer.

some have seen success in using a Izuzu trooper box, late 70's toyota box and a cadillac omega box. mounting could be a challenge, the steering arm too.

I think the Borg box for our Mustangs is the Izuzu Trooper box with a different flange welded on and they also must redo the pitman arm splines since the Mustang unit fits.
