I'm removing the underdrive pullies from my 93 mustang today and going back to stock pullies. The crank pulley bolts seem to be an internal hex? or allen? Like as if I could stick one of those L shaped allen wrenchs inside the bolt. Is it metric or standard size? I seemed to be able to get a L shaped 8mm allen wrench into the bolt but it won't give me enough leverage to undo it. so i need to get a socket that has the correct hex/allen size attached to it to get them off. I want to make sure i get the right one and not strip the bolt or I will never get this off. I already made this mistake getting the compressor manifold allen bolts off to replace the o ring seals. The allen wrench only seems to go into the bolt maybe 1/4 of an inch? Anyone know the correct tool for this? Thanks.

The balancer bolts are 3/8" diameter. I cannot see yours from here, but 3/8" socket head cap screws typically used to attach smaller sized pulleys would typically use a 3/8" hex tool. Don't waste your money on anything that says MADE IN CHINA on it. It will just cause you trouble.

Ok. i went to lowes and got that tool. they didn't have it in a 1/4 in drive only in a 3/8 drive. So i used a 3/8 to 1/2 adapter with a breaker bar. All thier tools are Kobalt so I'm not sure where it was made. I was afraid of stripping one bolt and then not being able to change the pulley out. I couldnt get the bolts loose since the crank would turn so i used a jack with a piece of wood to put some slight pressure on the balancer so that I could get the hex bolts free. I tried an air ratched and that didnt work. There wasn't enough room to use an impact gun without taking out the radiator. And the size was 8 mm. I'm pretty sure these are march underdrive pullies since there was a march sticker on the back window when i bought the car.
Huge difference in diameter from the stock pulley to this underdrive pulley. I'm really hoping this will help with my charging issues, and with the power steering, and complement the new ac stuff i'm putting in.
Now, I need 4 new non allen bolts that hold the stock crank pulley, Do i need split washers with the bolts? can i get the same size bolts that came off except not in hex, but with a standard head, grade 5? Same length? Are they 3/8 16 x 1? Back to Lowes again...

KOBALT = MADE IN CHINA, but made to be REAL SHINY in China.
If the old ones are stubborn, heat them with a propane torch and they will come right out.
I would use 3/8"-16 x 1" grade 8 hex head bolts (you can buy them cheap by the pound at tractor supply if you have those up there) and a split grade 8 lockwasher.
Grade 8 bolts will have 6 tick marks on the head.

OK. Success! Did exactly as you said. Grade 8 bolts and grade 8 split lockwasher from lowes. The old hex bolts came off when I had a jack under the crank pulley to keep it from spinning. I got lucky there that those bolts came out..especially with that Kobalt tool.
I put it all back together with the stock crank pulley and new bolts. Also put stock water pump pulley on, and took off that underdrive pulley too. I didn't have a stock alt pulley, so I left the underdrive pulley on the alt, but i'm going to do the 3g alternator upgrade next weekend anyway so won't be using that alt anyway soon.
I must say.. i noticed a difference right away with the volt gauge. It went right to 14 volts at idle now without headlights or ac on.. Before It was at 10 volts at idle without headlights or ac on with the underdrive crank pulley. Turned the headlights on and ac, and it went down to 8 volts with the underdrive pullies at idle. so the combination of a stock crank pulley and underdrive alt pulley helped with volts at idle. Also noticed the power steering wasn't whining at idle when turning the wheel. Power steering pump already had stock pulley and not an underdrive pulley. I hope this swap back to stock crank pulley will help with my AC at idle and on the road.
Nice. on to the next project:: 3g alternator.
