Thinking about doing a RTE 66 drive

I will be driving out to CA with my son who's starting an internship with TESLA.  Was thinking of going via RTE 66.  Won't have a lot of time for side trips but I figured there should be some "not to miss" stops along the way.  Any suggestions?

Starting in Detroit, MI and ending in Santa Clara, CA

Thanks

Re: Thinking about doing a RTE 66 drive

Avoid the Road Runner Lodge Motel and the gas station just East of Albuquerque that has bad gas.

Lots of nostalgic old garages and of course the speedway.

That bad gas made the trip a real mess. I liked the Roadrunner Lodge beds. Really comfortable mattresses.  You didn't like the place, Ed?

Re: Thinking about doing a RTE 66 drive

We did the Rt.  66 thang a couple years ago.(what's left of it!)
Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcary  NM....Retro 50's motel........pretty cool place to spend the night

Cadillac Graveyard  Amerillo, Texas......bring your spray paint (iconic Cadillacs buried nose first in a field in the middle of no where...don't miss it!)

Winslow, Arizona....go 'stand-on-the-corner-in-Winslow-Arizona-what-a-pretty-site-to-see'.

Midway Cafe, Adrian, Texas....midway point of rt. 66 (buy a T-shirt!....eat some home-made pie)
Sedona, Arizona......not sure if this is on 66 butt...one of the prettiest places in U.S.   (IMHO!)

Re: Thinking about doing a RTE 66 drive

Another +1 on the Cadillac Ranch and Winslow, AZ. Seligman, AZ also keeps its old school feel though it is somewhat touristy. Williams, AZ is lovely, and Kingman, AZ has some good museums and a nice old school 50's motel.
