Speedometer ticks

'66 Mustang with original speedo and cable. It has always ticked at certain speeds, and the needle wavers back and forth. Lubing cable didn't really help. I recently replaced the driven gear, and the noise/waver increased. (19t to 23t) I didn't move or change anything else.
If it needs a new cable assy, does anyone make a GOOD quality one that is also the correct length? Anyone here have a good original to sell?
Thanks, Ed

Re: Speedometer ticks

This won't help much, but I have experienced an on/off issue with my speedometer.  It seems every time the cable gets moved (for example I installed a back up light switch and moved the cable a little) the speedo would be erratic and then stop altogether.  I have been told that the cable inside the sleeve is either too long or too short (can't remember which).  I just drive at the speed of traffic or a speedo app on my phone so it is not that big a deal to me but I can appreciate your issue.  It's a reproduction cable from NPD.

Re: Speedometer ticks

Strange... I'm using a reproduction cable from NPD and mine works nice and smooth.  Maybe they changed vendors.

Re: Speedometer ticks

Sounds like your cable may be " a little kinky"!! After 60 years a lot of stuff gets kinky...J/K
Got a replacement from O'Reillys  and it fit great. A little longer than the original making it MUCH easier to install. Could actually attach it to the speedo(no pun intended) without needing to work blind feeling around under /behind the instrument panel.
Not too expensive either!!

Re: Speedometer ticks

I got a Scott Drake cable from CJ's (actually 2) and they were made wrong.  Top end crimped wrong could not attach to speedo (69-73 auto cable).
They offered to send one there cables, well when it came I was impressed.  Had a grommet, "O" ring and what really impressed me was if you held it with the speedo end down the cable would slide out, that thing was slick.

And to boot it was cheaper than the Scott Drake and a much better quality.  $18-$24 depending if on sale and free shipping.

Because of my own stupidity I bought 2 more, one for adjusting fit of cable under dash not realizing I pushed it in the rag joint.  Backed car out of garage a few days later and confounded by my steering binding.  Kinked that cable.
And another one by not watching where the floor jack was on the crossmember, just pinched the cable

Re: Speedometer ticks

Scott Drake used to be "the one to get".  Lately, since they have started putting their name on so many other products, the quality of alot of it has been quite disappointing.

Re: Speedometer ticks

I have found that also Steve. The folks in Taiwan have figured out how to match the "quality" of mainland Chinese parts.
