I finally got the car somewhat together and got to drive it some (to a buddies shop to cut the headlight bowls in half, shove them through the Shelby headlight buckets and weld them back together. I wish I would have known the headlights go in BEFORE the nose assembly, and there is no way I'm taking all that apart again).
The oil light is on, and I have an aftermarket oil pressure gauge. When driving, the gauge reads 40-50. At a stoplight, it drops to 20. What should it be?

My 289 with 100k miles idles around 25 comes up to 45 off idle

Do you have the correct oil pressure sender for an idiot light!
Offline
I think so. The light wasn't on when I first got the car.

Can anyone help me more with this? Should I replace the sending unit? It's a 351W with 10k miles, oil light was not on when I bought it. Is this pressure ok? And how can I make the oil light go back to off?

The oil pressure sending unit is a switch. If functioning correctly, when oil pressure goes below the designed pressure threshold, the switch will "go to ground" and send that ground signal to the gauge cluster and turn on the dash light. If that wire from the sending unit has rubbed through the insulation anywhere between the sending unit and the gauge cluster, and is touching metal, it will also turn on the dash light. I would:
1) unplug the lead at the idiot light sending unit (between the fuel pump and the oil filter) and start the engine. What does the aftermarket gauge read?
2) Is the light on or off? If the light is on, the wire should be investigated. If the light is off, buy a new sending unit at the parts store for a 68 Mustang with the idiot light dash. They are cheap. Install it, hook up the wire, start the engine, and recheck the light.

First check the oil pressure sending unit to make sure you have a good connection. If you cannot find anything wrong with the wiring, buy a stock oil pressure sensor for indicator light. Your local parts house should have them.
