Paint shop Raleigh, NC? Or what to ask a shop for? I hit a dead end!

So I am having a devil of a time working out where to get my '67 painted.

What I am TRYING to do - strip down the car myself, take off pretty much all the chrome, drive it to a shop, and get a good (not Maaco, not Concours) paint job of a satin or flat gunmetal.  Fill a few holes to remove some emblems. And, the biggie, probably replace the roof since it is vinyl now and looks rusted underneath.  It's a daily driver.  One I am proud of and want to look good and last, but at the end of the day it's just a heavily modified daily driver.

I've talked to a few body shops and they don't want to do it.  They're too busy with insurance jobs and don't want to do classics.
I've talked to about 6 restoration, classic specialty, and custom cars (read - handle shaving, spoilers, lambo doors, etc) shops and they are all booked solid for the next 3-12(!) months.  In one guy's case, he only did top-top end jobs and wasn't in his business model.  All his paint jobs start at $10k and go up to $100k.

So.. Help!!  Does anyone know of a good place to go to to just shoot this with a decent paint system without getting on a half year wait list?  They roof may throw a wrench into things.  Or maybe what should I ask these shops for so they don't think I am asking too much and are estimating the wrong thing (I am describing it will be self-prepped and new roof likely needed).

Just outside Raleigh, North Carolina.  Recent transplant so I don't know the area at all.

When it came time to paint the hood on my truck I went and bought a Harbor Freight paint gun and Base Coat/Clear Coat paint from O'reilly's and did it myself.
It's not a show quality paint job, but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out...definitely good enough for a daily driver.

See my post here.  http://fyi.boardhost.com/viewtopic.php?id=7167

Thanks.  I have been very tempted to just do it myself - that ends up happening a lot to me in hobbies and at work.  But from prior experience painting my quarter panels over and over and over again due to f#%$n' runs and drips I am trying my best to not do resort to this (although that was a rattle can job.  But still - it was enough to tell myself painting is not my strong suit).

I wouldn't totally discount Maaco!!!
I had them paint my Mustang once and my little S-10 also. The thing with Maaco's.............they are NOT all just alike. Some do pretty darn good work for the money. Definately  daily driver quality. Is it going to look like Mustang Steve's 66???? NOPE!! Is it something the average joe-som can pick apart  just looking at it???NOPE!!  Does the price start from $10,000-$100,000?? Uh-uhh.
Go look at their work a few times and see how they do.
I was totally surprised.

I had maaco paint my 67 FB back in 1985, I did all the body work and gave it to them needing the final sand and prep work all chrome and such was removed when I dropped it off, they did the final prep painted jambs and body for $500 (remember this was 1985) and I thought they did a fine job. picture is a scan of a pic of the car but it did turn out nice. Paint was way more glossy in person remember this is a scan of a photo from 1985 35mm film.

Re: Paint shop Raleigh, NC? Or what to ask a shop for? I hit a dead end!

Interesting.  Maybe I will give Maaco another look.  I had them paint this same car about 15 years ago for $700 (I removed chrome and took all top surfaces down to metal per their recommendation since the car had been reshot once already).  The color has held up fine.  What I wasn't happy with was how easily it scratched.  And since I am going with a satin and can't using rubbing compound or color waxes to hide them....

I'll give them a ring tomorrow.  Maybe I will be prepping this weekend!

Any other thoughts?

Also the dreaded roof... looks like repo coup roofs are STILL unavailable.  Everyone says they are a dime a dozen in the scrap yard.  I must find this mythical mustang scrap yard one day.

Re: Paint shop Raleigh, NC? Or what to ask a shop for? I hit a dead end!

So Maaco (at least the ones near me) don't shoot satin finishes.  I am so tired of how difficult these seemingly simple things can be.  Looks like unless I want to wait 8 months and shell out $10k+, I'm signing up to do it myself.  Time to start the research and make the judgement....

I am really scared of this roof though.  I don't know what to do if I peel back that vinyl and find it needs a new one.  Anyone else deal with this?

Ok, so I knew isocyantes in urethane was an issue from a research project I did for a client a while back, but it is sounding like it is a big no-go for painting in an attached garage.  Any ideas?

You can make a temporary spray booth in your driveway with plastic pipe (or wood) and clear plastic sheet. You will need forced air ventilation, so U-tube is your friend there. Also, you must use a full face respirator with supplied air for urethane paint, no filter masks! Anyone that says you can spray urethane with a filter mask is not your friend. You can buy a supplied air system on ebay for $200-$400.

I think you have to evaluate the roof, and then decide how to proceed.

My neighbor had his 66 painted at Maaco. Gloss black! Turned out great. He did all of the body work and prep himself.

Re: Paint shop Raleigh, NC? Or what to ask a shop for? I hit a dead end!

I wanted to chime in here... I have lived in Fayetteville and Raleigh and have gone through similar experiences to you. Yes, it is frustrating and I feel your pain. If it were me, here is what I would do;

1. Google is your friend. Take 2-3 pictures of the car (make sure the image files are not too large) and I would email a bunch of body shops with the pictures and a brief summary of what you want done.
2. I would look at body shops outside of the Raleigh area. Don't get me wrong, Raleigh is a beautiful area, but I think they can be a little up themselves and maybe this is what you are experiencing. Have a look in areas like Fuquay Varina, Greensboro, Hillsboro, Clayton, Apex, Smithfield and areas like that. I had some bad experiences with businesses in Fayetteville.

I found this body shop in Fuquay Varina  -  http://www.ncclassicrestorations.com/
No idea what they are like, I just found them by doing a search.

Maaco... I agree with other opinions here. I think they are ok. I think it comes down to just clearly communicating your expectations and ask whether they can do it. Personally, I think they can cater to what you want.

Just my opinion....

Re: Paint shop Raleigh, NC? Or what to ask a shop for? I hit a dead end!

I went to car shows in my area and a few car club meetings.  Talked with the participants/members and asked them who did their paint and body and whether they were happy.  I thought before I started I'd have to make a list and check each place out but it turned out that quite a few people used the same place - one of those happy circumstances when it turns into a no-brainer.  I am very satisfied with the work done and the price I paid.

This approach also works really well for finding places that do good alignments and other work on classics/collector cars.

Re: Paint shop Raleigh, NC? Or what to ask a shop for? I hit a dead end!

To close the loop on this:

I did find a guy to paint it!!!  He was exactly the type of guy I was wanting to find - has a place outside of town, a few scrap cars on his properties, willing to and can do any job - insurance work, custom jobs, body work, mechanic, and breeds German Shepards.  Has a towing business for anything from tiny hybrids to Semis and RVs.  A great guy whose usual response is "yeah, we can do that for ya."  in a thick NC accent.  When looking over my car  he even mentioned off hand "You know... I've got a 9" Ford diff with disc brakes on it just sittin' over there.  Just sayin'...."

So if you are in the Raleigh/Durham, NC area and need anything - Advanced Towing and Collision is the way to go.  I told him he should make a different branded subsidiary to push his custom and all-around work, but we'll see.  He seems plenty busy and happy for now.

So thanks to the community for keeping me going!!

Also - the roof was a very pleasant surprise.  A bunch of pock marks and a few rust holes no bigger than a 1/4" here and there.  Probably the first thing ever that went my way on this damn car.
