intake gaskets

how do i determine which intake gasket set to order? have 289 with 302 heads and edelbrock highrise 4bbl intake.....can't stop water leaks from corners....last set tried was for 85 302, the gasket opening at the water passage behind thermostat was actually too big and was out past the machined surface of the head....the actual water passage is only about 3/4" wide but the gasket was nearly 2".....i hope i'm writing this clearly enough i'm new to small block fords and about 25 years out of practise working on the older cars.....it's a 1967 mustang 6 cylinder conversion barn find.....any help out there?

Re: intake gaskets

Get early 289/302 (72 or ealrlier) intake gaskets.  They have the small water ports.

Re: intake gaskets

thank you very much espicially for the quick response.....this is a neat little car that was in a shed since 96...solid lift cam...dual exhaust still has the little paper part number tags on it...body is in very good condition...i do want to convert it to 5 lug but don't know if i want aftermarket kits or a donor car.....a car might be hard to find....but anyways  ...thanks again and i will be on here again i'm sure

Re: intake gaskets

I would not DRIVE a car with a V8 and the 4 lug rear end in it.  They are prone to breaking while you go down the highway, making the car unrollable from the fast lane where you were driving.  When it breaks, the car stops right there and cannot be moved without a tow truck.  I sat and watch one get rear ended after it quit being able to roll.  Get a V8 rear in it or leave it parked.

Re: intake gaskets

i stand corrected......was told that the rearend in the car now is a fox body 8.8...just 4 lug......what about 5 lug out of 93 explorer

Re: intake gaskets

8.8 is a good one.  You will need to narrow it and center it up, but the Exploder rear is a popular swap.

If it already has an 8.8 out of a fox body in it then you should be able to just buy some 5-lug axles for it and just swap the axles.  I have heard of the fox body guys doing this swap to get 5-lugs so they'd have a better selection of wheels available to them.

Re: intake gaskets

are there 5 lug axles that are a swap or do i need to measure for custom length and get them made to fit

There are some already made for the swap. Pretty much any of the parts places that specialize in Fox Stang parts should have them.

'66 Fastback since July 27, 1981. Springtime Yellow, originally a 200 cu in, 4 speed. Also a '92 LX Coupe, 5.0, 5 speed.

Re: intake gaskets

You can use 2  Ranger left side axles or 2 Windstar right side axles .

Re: intake gaskets

I believe the axles are from a Ford "Aerostar" van vs the Windstar.............

Re: intake gaskets

If you have a hard time finding the gaskets which I've experienced I would use the black permatex gasket maker the instant one or 24hr that's what most top notch repair places use when doing any gaskets

Re: intake gaskets

found the correct gasket set today.....used 1970 mustang 302 4bbl as my vehicle at autozone....felpro p/n MS90103 is for the engines with small water passages....going to use mustang steve's installtion suggestion and lose the cork end gaskets and use just RTV....will find out saturday if i can move on to something else on this project......by the way does anyone know what years of rangers and windstars have the axles that swap out into a 8.8 for 5 lug conversion

While your in there!......studs vs bolts are a good thing. Easier to set mani in place that way....especially if RTV is involved!

Re: intake gaskets

6sally6 makes a good point.  If you use a long stud or threaded rod, one or two on each head, that will allow you to slide the intake down the studs so when it gets to the heads it won't slide around.  Once you get a few other bolts started, remove the studs and insert the correct bolts.  That hint is detailed on the intake installation page.
