Looking for Spacer Info

Ended up with a set of 2007 Bullitt style wheels for my 66. Figured for $150.00 for wheels and tires I couldn't go too wrong. The back of the wheel says 17x8 45MM offset, I'm running the 13.2" brakes from a 2013 GT, How big of a spacer/adapter do I need? 1.5" sound right?

Re: Looking for Spacer Info

I e got '01 cobra wheels on my 66 not sure of the back spacing but I'm using a 1" spacer. Tires are 235/45/17.

Re: Looking for Spacer Info

Consensus here is that 8" wheels do not work on the front of a '66.  That said you would need 4.75" back spacing.  I think that offset is not back spacing.  take a straight edge and lay it across the back of the rim.  Measure the distance from the straight edge to the mounting surface on the back center section of the wheel.  Subtract 4.75 and you have the size of spacer you need.  Given the variations in our cars'  construction, you may have to monkey around with that figure a little to get the best  fit.  Good luck

Re: Looking for Spacer Info

Offset is the measurement of the wheel mounting face from the centerline of the wheel.  Offset can be positive or negative depending on which direction off center you go.  Positive offset is where the mounting face is closer to the outside of the wheel; negative offset if the opposite.

Backspacing is the measurement of the wheel mounting face from the inside face of the wheel.

Typically in discussions about wheel fitment you will see mention of backspacing, not offset.  I would suggest measuring as lowercasesteve suggests.

Also, what size tires are you going to run?  Wheel size and backspacing are part of the picture.  Tires can be the same width as a wheel, or wider, or narrower.  The wheel may clear just fine, but the tire may hit, so its an important part of the equation.

Re: Looking for Spacer Info

Your wheels have 5.95” backspacing. The 2001-2004 wheels have 5.72” backspacing. That is right at 1/4” less backspacing than your wheels. Since the 01-04 wheels will bolt on (I did NOT say fit) using a 1” spacer, you would need a 1.25” spacer to get your wheels to clear the control arm. You will need to run the narrowest and shortest (within reason) 17” tire you can find to keep the tires from rubbing the fender.

A 17 x 7” wheel with 4” to 4.5” backspacing would be a better fit and allow use of a 225 x45/17 tire on the front of a 65-66 Mustang.

See my post above.  The 94-04 wheels (Bullitt actually started in 2001) will bolt on with a 1" spacer.  The 05-14 wheels bolt on with a 1.25" spacer.

Tires from a 2007 will definitely be too tall to use on a 65-66.

However, the 8" wide wheels are a bit much on the front of a 65-66.  Lots of folks are using them, but fenders need to be massaged and small cross-section tires must be used.  I have these wheels on my 66, but I narrowed the wheels by removing a 1" section from the back half of the rim.  That changed the effective backspacing to 4.72" which will "just bolt up" without a spacer.  I did this a long time ago, before any 17" aftermarket wheels were available for the early cars.  Now, you have your choice of just about anything in a 17x7 with correct 4" to 4.5" backspacing that will bolt right up and clear the fenders for a reasonable price.  I originally ran the 8" wheels with a 1" spacer up front, but tire rub was a problem, plus the aesthetics of a too-wide wheel just were not right.

Pic below shows the 7" wide wheel with 235x45/17 tire.

Two pics below shows the 8" wide wheel with a 1" spacer and 235x45/17 tire.

Note the rub marks on the tire, even with a nicely rolled fender lip.
