That's pretty cool to see the car in all its glory after so many years in hiding.
I first time it watched Bullitt as a kid, I was hooked to the sound the car made as it went through the gears. I set it to record on the DVR then had completely forgotten about it when it was finally played again. I watch it every so often and Sheryl just shakes her head with that little "no" look as she walks past!!

Amazing it survived. Typically those cars were destroyed by the studios to prevent lawsuits. There was always conjecture that they somehow survived.
The question is, is this the car that did the stunts or the hero car that was in a lot of the other shots? As I recall there were two cars used, and only one was a 390 car; the other was a small block car. Part of the reason for the debadging, removal of the fog lights from the GT car, etc. was to make both cars look alike for continuity purposes.
It would be interesting to go over the car and see what all have been done to it. I know they played hell keeping the stunt car together.
Still IMO the best car chase scene ever, and I don't think it will ever be surpassed, especially in this world of Fast and Furious with ridiculous CGI. The absolute best of a bygone era of moviemaking.

Watched this one and then about 3 others. Sure made my day a lot better. Thanks to Stevo and Rufus for sharing both of the links.

I always enjoy watching Bullitt. Steve McQueen was one of my all time favs. Right up there with Eastwood , DeNiro, Denzell, Anthony Hopkins.
I like the chase scene in Bullitt where the Mustang was running a 9 speed gear box! He just kept shift'in til he caught that Charger(which was bad a$$ too....loved that year of Dodge!)

I always thought he was double clutching when shifting. It doesn't sound like a regular shift, nor a powershift on the gear changes.
Ah, a couple extra forward gears, no big deal. There are other movies where the car seems to shift into a second reverse gear. Now THAT's funny!

Maybe I missed something, but I thought they recently found the original in Mexico?

There were two of them used in making the movie. The one south of the border was the car used in the jump scenes and when found in a salvage yard was pretty much junk except for the provenance.

This link popped up on me. It’s a good read.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
