Here I go again

HA!  I'm doing it again!  See thread started 9-28-15.  All of a sudden it started pinging, running hot and using oil. I boroscoped the intake runners and gasket material had moved into the runner path. I pulled the manifold yesterday and same old story. The gaskets looked like they were beaten down to the point of separation but not as bad as last time. I guess I didn't' drive it as long. What surprised me was that all the manifold bolts seemed really loose except for 2 of them in the middle on one side. A lot of oil is sitting on the valves and they are coated with a lot of oily carbon. Last time I went with the Fel-Pro 1250 gaskets because I have aluminum Edelbrock heads. Steel gaskets on aluminum make me nervous. I see now that Eldebrock makes their own gaskets. I'll try those. How often should I be retorquing my intake manifold? This is getting old! And so am I. My back is killing me.

Re: Here I go again

I have Edelbrock aluminum heads & manifold on my 351W and use the Edelbrock gasket #7220.  No matter who makes these gaskets, the intake gasket should fit into a slot on the head gaskets that will hold them in place.  Edelbrock recommends the use of their "Gasgacinch" on the cylinder head flange and the cylinder side of the gasket.  I've have no issues when I used this, and no issues when I didn't use it.  I always apply a little (less than 1/16") silicone around each intake port and the water passages.
I usually check the torque an hour or so after the final pass.  I have found the manifold bolts were "loose' after running the engine for a period time, but have not had issues with any leakage, or gasket moving in the long term as you indicate.

Re: Here I go again

Check and re-torque bolts "several" times!
Try some Indianhead Gasket Shellac!?!! Maybe just on the head side.....
I once saw an article where they knocked a few dimples in the Alum. with a center
punch. Kinda gives the area a little "tooth".
I don't know butt-watt could it hurt?!!(only if you DON'T go crazy making dimples!)

Re: Here I go again

You gave me gave me an idea. I'll put torque seal on it. It's a thick paint used to tell if the bolts are backing out.

It's good to live near Summit to go pick up the parts needed to put it back together but it doesn't matter if you forget to get some of the parts you need. I need a way to get rid of my forgetter.

Re: Here I go again

I always check torque on intake, head, and exhaust gaskets every run of a new motor build until I see no more turn of the torque wrench after every run of the motor. Haven't had any issues. Takes 3 or 4 runs usually.

Re: Here I go again

I'm thinking that you loosen each bolt individually one at a time and re torque it or do you just torque it from where it is? I've gone over and retorqued it from where it is about 10 times now and have even got it together good enough to run yet. All the bolts are torqued except #2 and #10. It seems like they are backing out.

Re: Here I go again

Ran the engine Friday night and checked the torque a gain. Got about an 1/8 turn on most of the bolts. They are pretty hard to get to with the carb and heater hoses in the way. Drove it last night and parked it. No pinging this time except when initially flooring it at around 70 mph just a couple pings. I set the timing to 6º BTC.

Re: Here I go again

Have you installed lighter advance springs inSIDE the distrib and altered the curve?!

Re: Here I go again

Tighten the bolts three times at least, using proper sequence. I do that when first assembling and never have issues.  See my website article on installing aluminum intakes.  Follow it and you will not have problems.

You will be surprised how many times you can retorque the same bolts you just torqued and have them tighten further as you go. At least 3-4 times before the intake is fully seated.
