Has anyone installed a new push button style start in there Mustang?

I went to pull my 69 Mustang out of the garage to set up for my Daughters graduation party.  Parked the Mustang in my Neighbor yard.  Went to pull the key out and the inside insert and the key came out with bunch of small parts.  It would go back in but just spin around.  I think in the 26 years I've owned it I've replaced this about 4 times at least.  Wondering if anyone has done the push button start?  How does it work?  How do you get accessories power work with push button start?   What system did you use?   Thanks Steve69

Re: Has anyone installed a new push button style start in there Mustang?

I'm a bit leery of aftermarket systems, Steve.  I put what should be a pretty good Alarm/remote start system (Viper) in the Heap and I 'm getting ready to disconnect the remote start section as it is doing very strange things and I don't use it at all anymore.  Which, is too bad as it had great range and was great for cooling the car off or warming it up in motel or shopping center parking lots.  But now it seems to have lost it's mind.
Just sayin'

What’s happening to it Bob? I have one too. The issue I have is it doesn’t unlock the car / respond to requests after it remote starts . Anyway.

If it aint broke, I have'nt tried to "Fix" it yet!

I think Steve means the type of push button start that is on the dash not a remote, or not! I think that you would still need a physical ket to turn the ignition on or off and or acc functions.

In modern cars with dash mounted start buttons the cars computer system must sense a key on board before it will allow the start button to function.

Re: Has anyone installed a new push button style start in there Mustang?

Perhaps there is a root cause to your ignition switch failures that you can address.  Do you think mounting hole might be worn thus allowing too much movement of the switch side to side as you turn the key once the switch loosens some?  If so, perhaps repairing the mounting hole will enable the next switch to last longer?  Or perhaps you can find a way to shim the next switch so that it will not shift side to side even if the mounting ring is not fully tightened.  Either way, the KISS principle would dictate just replacing the switch again.  An average of lasting 6 years each hardly justifies much effort be put into re-engineering the switch.

...now, if re-engineering the switch is something that interests you even if the switch were fine, then that is another matter altogether.

Re: Has anyone installed a new push button style start in there Mustang?

First, it started shutting off after a couple of minutes if the AC was on.  I think that has to do with a negative feedback from the AC clutch disengaging but adding diodes to all the usual suspect circuits doesn't seem to help.  Then it stared just shutting the engine down after the key was on and remote start was off and the car had gone a half mile or so down the road...totally un-ack-septable.

Re: Has anyone installed a new push button style start in there Mustang?

Bob, perhaps something weird is going on with your voltage.  If you don't have a digital volt meter, consider plugging one of these in and see if you're getting a voltage drop or spike when it shuts down.

Re: Has anyone installed a new push button style start in there Mustang?

I've always thought it would be cool to get rid of the key and convert the cigarette lighter to a push button for the starter.
Haven't figured out how to switch accessories and Run on yet without making it super easy for someone to drive off w/o my permission yet.

Re: Has anyone installed a new push button style start in there Mustang?

If you have a lot of stuff on your key ring it can kill the ignition switch fairly quickly.  I usually only keep the 2 keys I need for the car and the house key on my ring.  Less is more :-)
