Tail pipe clamp on O2 sensor for temporary testing

I'm debating using a afr gauge for carb tuning. Does anyone have any experience with a tail pipe clamp on oxygen sensor? What I would like to do is use the gauge on several vehicles and not make a permanent installation. Tune the carb then transfer the equipment to the next car and do the same. Is it reasonably accurate or is it too much of a compromise?-Brad

Re: Tail pipe clamp on O2 sensor for temporary testing

It won't work.  For an O2 sensor to be effective it needs to be either in, or as close to the header collector as possible.  By the time the exhaust reaches the tailpipe your readings would be erroneous, because the exhaust will have lost so much heat, which is what the O2 is really measuring.

You could weld an O2 sensor bung in the correct place on the header collector on all your cars, then buy bung plugs to cap the holes when the O2 sensor is not being used. Everyone that sells weld on O2 sensor bungs also sells threaded bung caps.

Yep, I was just thinking the same thing.  Or, buy a sensor for each car (they are a bit pricey though because they're wideband) and set up the wiring under the dash so you can just plug the gauge in each car without having to get dirty or crawl under the car.

I fully agree with all responses. I happened on to this accessory and wondered if it might work. I hope the picture comes through. Years ago I had a "Exhaust Gas Analyzer" that Sears sold where you would stick a sensor up the tail pipe. It sort of worked but the readings lagged horribly. -Brad

Can't say, but I will say that Innovate Motorsports has a lot of bad reviews online, so I don't know how much I'd trust their stuff.  This is what led me to AEM for my '89 GT project.
