Door Hinges

I'm working through a bunch of little nit picky things on my '67 that I've lived with for years, but now have the ability and funds to correct.  One of those issues is that the doors don't stay open, especially if the car is on any kind of grade.  I looked at the hinges and noticed that I appear to have stamped hinges on the RH door, and a stamped upper & cast lower on the LH door.  '67 was a changeover year, and I can't say what's original and what's not at this point, and honestly don't care.  My questions are:

Is one style hinge better than the other or are they just different?

Should the doors stay open like a modern car, or am I just expecting too much for 50+ year old technology?

Re: Door Hinges

The 69 lower hinges were stamped steel. 67 had stamped upper and cast lowers.  The 68 are a lot better design, IF you install the MustangSteve hinge rebuild kit.  I designed this rebuild in about 1990 and offered a lifetime warranty on any I rebuild. ( And I did ALOT of them).  Michael still sells the kits or will rebuild your hinges at http://www.mustangsteve.com/hinge

69-70 pictured, but same type rebuild as the 68.  I would encourage you to use the 68 lower hinges with this rebuild kit.

Re: Door Hinges

I'm assuming that the repros marked '67-'68 are all just the '68 style, as none of them are cast.  Can I just buy a set of Dynacorn hinges and have them converted or is there some magic in the factory hinges?

AND, will they hold my doors open?

Re: Door Hinges

The dynacorn hinges have alot of slop n them, but if you add the rebuild kits, they will have zero play and will last forever. Be sure to grease the detent wheels where they interface with the torsion spring as well as pump full of grease.

For my money, I would try to get a decent used set of OEM hinges and just rebuild them. You should be able to get a set of four under $100. I know Michael has a bunch of used uppers. Lowers are more scarce.
Be sure if you get used hinges that the detent wheels and torsion spring are intact.
