Rear Seat Belt and Child car seat question

Ok Guys

I know some of you may have installed car seats for your kids in a classic mustang ( or I am hoping you did), Can i ask what did you do ? what product you used?

My car doesnt have rear seat belts , I am going to need to install those as well, so that said, what rear seat belts are best to use?

I Cannot weld ... I will need some local help for that when time comes, if its requried.

But PLEASE help ! (65 coupe)

Re: Rear Seat Belt and Child car seat question

1966 mustang coupe...

I had car seats in the back seat for my kiddos briefly.  Even if you don't have seatbelts in the rear, the mounting locations should still be there.  Most likely someone took them out or never had them from the factory but none the less the mounting locations should still be there.  Plenty of diagrams online of where the tapped holes are.  If they are missing you would need to weld them back in place.  In the rear, you are also only left w/ lap belt options.  This should still be fine for the front facing kid seats.  Works the same way as modern kid seats when you use the seatbelt instead of the the little hooks to mount the seat belt.

Seat belts are pretty cheap.  Usually $25 each.  Don't get me wrong, always where a seat belt but these cars are pretty much death traps in any major accident anyway. Comforting I know.

Re: Rear Seat Belt and Child car seat question

i have seen no diagram yet of the mounting locations :/ ..please do help me

What about a rear facing seat? probably the same right

Also, any seat belts you particularly recommend? like CJ pony parts or anywhere specific you like to buy seat belts from

And as far as the death trap. yeah well its true.. i know

Re: Rear Seat Belt and Child car seat question

I've got factory belts in my car that were rewebbed years ago by a company called Ssnake Oyl Products I think.  Turns out they're still around, found their website:

https://www.ssnake-oyl.com/

They did a really nice job, and I like knowing I have originals, not Chinese made stuff.  After 25 years they still retract like brand new and all the latches still work.  I highly doubt the repros would be in such a state after that long, even given the sporadic use.

For mounting the seat there should be an option for using a traditional belt, though some newer seats I've seen only have the provisions for the hook style installation, which would put you SOL.  In all honesty, the way child seats are built now, unless you somehow totally botch the install, that kid's going to be fine.  We'll all be dead in a wreck, but the baby probably doesn't even wake up.

Re: Rear Seat Belt and Child car seat question

When I converted a 65 to RHD, lap/sash seatbelts were a requirement. Plus baby seat anchorage points for each rear seat position.
The engineer I used to sign of my work stated that I needed to be able to lift the car by the mounting bolt for the baby seat without major deformity of the sheetmetal. (No actual lifting test required).
He suggested a 12"x12" 3/16 plate be welded to the bottom of the parcel shelf for each seat capsule anchorage point.
By the time the plate is trimmed around the speaker openings in the parcel shelf it is no longer 12x12 ... still acceptable. Mercedes spare parts have a threaded nut plate with the industry standard thread size for anchorage points, that I pop riveted to the bottom of the plate that was installed.
For the non retractable lap/sash belts I used, I copied the size and thickness of the original front seat belt strengthening plate at all three points.
Let me know if none of this makes sense and I'll try to clarify.

Re: Rear Seat Belt and Child car seat question

I think I bought some on the bay once...installed them was pretty straight forward ...when my kids were babies I used a full size car seat for them..but when they grew up into toddlers I used 2 that kinda crossed there laps and didn't have a back rest just a seat and like an adjustable big lap thing..i was going to put some cool msterial on it but by the time I came around to it they pretty much out grew the seats..the car was only used occasionally for cruises n stuff like that..so I felt safe with them in it as I wasn't racing down the highway with them in it lol

Did your car already have the seat belt mounting plates installed on the underside of the floorpan..  ?

Re: Rear Seat Belt and Child car seat question

I'LL be the one to say it!!........................Don't put the kiddies in the Mustang AND go for a ride.
Not until they can sit in the front seat(facing forward using the belt).  Sure they're cool cars butt I don't think you can "easily" make them as safe as even a  20 year old car!
These things are  over 50 years old!.  Sure....old Mike usta stand UP in the front seat while my Dad would hold out his arm to catch me when he slammed on the brakes! (Being careful to not burn me with his cigarette in his mouth.....with the windows rolled up tight!).
Times change and what was OK "back-in-the-day" is.........not so much any more.
I vote to let'em play in it.......act like they're driving it.....get their picture made in it.......butt put'em in the "family hauler" when its time to go somewhere.
Much safer!
6sally6
PS..............OR........do like so many of these "vacation idiots" around here do and let the kiddies sit UN BUCKLED  and UN restrained in a golf cart and go ripp'in around streets and cross 4 lane highways rolling as fast as they will go!!  Maybe even let the grand young'un drive the golf cart while you let'em sit in your lap.
NO seat belts.....no air bags....NO DOORS!...."What could possibly go worng?.....gimme a beer Mable"!

OK.............I'm done!

Re: Rear Seat Belt and Child car seat question

no......I drilled the holes...and the mounting kit came with really huge washers so they acted as mounting plates....at the time I had 2 mustangs and one of them had belts already installed so I used that one for refrence..it actually had the same kit installed....it was awhile ago and i think thats how i remember it..lol..I have the seats in a box somewhere if I find them ill post a pic of what they looked like.

Re: Rear Seat Belt and Child car seat question

Wesco makes a 4-point seat belt that appears could be used in the rear seat.
I think each state has there own criteria for the age/weight of a child regarding when they do not have to be in a car seat.
