Finally getting around to this...
I used 5/16-18 weldnuts. Way easier for installation and gives a nice firm hold. I know there was at least one other person who said they did this mod.
1) Did you just replace the parking brake cables or did you mod the existing one to attach to the brake handle?
2) This device is getting stuck at the fully extended position. I'm wondering if it might be defective. When I pull it all the way up the little ratchet arm goes too far back and I have to take out the pin to release the arm.

I am using the Lokar cables since I was starting from scratch. I have them connected to the Cobra calipers. The Lokar cables/housings allowed me to tuck them up and out of the way and then connect right up to the handle. Not sure if your driveshaft is in but be sure to check that the mechanism clears the driveshaft when mounted on top. Mine is close but when I mocked it up it will still clear when the rear suspension is fully compressed.
I ended up forming a 1/8" plate about 3 inches wide that I welded to the top of the tunnel as it seemed like I was getting a fair amount of flex when mounting the handle just to the sheet metal. It is probably over-engineered as the handle bracket itself adds a fair amount of stiffness.
With my brakes adjusted the handle does not go all the way "up" so I have not observed your problem with it getting stuck. I had the experience years ago on my Cobra kit car of the teeth failing on the ratchet (they claim to have corrected this). It is an interesting experience hearing a pop and then watching your car roll down the driveway and then cross the street without hitting anything. In other words, inspect the ratchet teeth from time to time.
I am on the road this week but if you need any pics on the cable arrangement let me know.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
