Borgson

Had to cancel my steering kit from CCP. Ordered it a couple of months ago.  Was told it would ship in 3 to 5 days. Finally canceled order on August 4. Drove to Summit Racing in Arlington today and picked up a Borgson kit for the 67. Was under the impression they rebuilt old Isuzu units. This one has the cast in mount and Borgson cast into the housing.

Re: Borgson

Yup...they started making special forgings...at least for Mustangs... a year or so ago.  Mine is one of the Trooper boxes and the sector seal started leaking a little before FWB last year.  By the time we got home it was leaking way more than a little so I sent it back.  That's when I found out they were making their own boxes.
Hope you like your's as much as I like this one, Steve.

Also hope you folks have a great Bash this year.  We are leaving Wednesday for a two month trip that will bring us through Texas near the end of Sept. so we will miss the bash.

Re: Borgson

You may find the factory assist setting is WAY too much and makes the car twitchy.  There's a kit that allows you to reduce the assist by reducing the pressure.  Once I did that I've been extremely happy with mine.

Re: Borgson

Just for the Info, TKO, what pump are you using?  I have the stock 5.0 Ford pump and it works just right.

Re: Borgson

Saginaw.  The Ford pumps run lower pressure, around 1100psi.  The stock Saginaw setting is like 1500psi.

Re: Borgson

Probably 'splains why the 5.0 pump worked great with the stock 66 setup.

Re: Borgson

It didn't hurt, but my concern would be either running steering fluid through a pump that is meant to run F type ATF or running F type ATf through a box meant for steering fluid.  I've researched the Ford pumps pretty thoroughly and the consensus from those who seem to know a lot about them is that often the cavitation noise people find so annoying is from running the wrong fluid in them.

I've run a ton of the Saginaw pumps over the years and only recall one that went bad, and it was on a car that wasn't maintained properly or driven regularly.  They seem to be pretty bulletproof.  There's a bracket that allows running a Sagnizw pump with the stock 5.0 accessory drive.  When I convert over that's what I'm going to do.

I’m attempting to put a Sag pump on my ‘92 5.0 now. The bracket is excellent. The only things you need to worry about are positioning the pulley AND having a hose made. The 4X4 company selling the bracket makes their hose to fit a 5.0 engine in a Bronco not a Mustang. I’m having a she-dog of a time getting someone to make a hose for me. My local fittings and hose guy won’t do it from a liability standpoint. I told him everyone in the industry gets around that by using the ‘ol “Off road use only” clause, but no dice. I even offered to bring in a Notary. Still no dice. I found a place in LA that’ll do it but that’ll eat up an entire day of my life getting there and back.

Muzz, my O'Reilly's makes Gates hoses on the spot. If yours doesn't, there should be one in Fresno who does.

Re: Borgson

Ah, see, I didn't even think about the hose part of it.  There's a couple of good hydraulic shops around here, hopefully one of them will be cool and make me up one.  I mean, what's the liability?  You'd lose power assist, not steering.

Re: Borgson

Muzz, I might be able to help you. I'm in the middle of installing the Borgeson in my 66 with a Saginaw pump. I made my own hoses. Mabe I can make you a hose.

Re: Borgson

I have the modified Aisin pump on my Borgeson set up. I also have the supplied Saginaw pump. I did have to make my own spacers for the pump installation. The ones Borgeson sent were 1/2" short and the pulleys wouldn't line up. I had the machinist at work make me a couple out of some bar stock that were 1/2" longer, and they fit fine. Biggest problem I had was the damned return line, and having to force it over the nipple on the stub pipe on the pump reservoir. Eventually got it.

Re: Borgson

I'm running a Ford pump on my 65 with Borgeson and it works perfect!  All the way from Dallas to Fort Walton Beach, Florida and back.  Gotta have the right JBA header on a 351W to clear the pump and the cable clutch.

Re: Borgson

My JBA headers cleared the cable clutch and pump just fine.  The steering box was another issue.  I had the LH header on and off about 4 times to clearance it for the box.  I REALLY loved take a BFH and a 1-1/8" Muncie countergear pin to a brand new set of ceramic coated headers.
