1965 ignition switch

My ignition switch on my 1965 needs to rotate clockwise so the key will go in straight up and down. How do I turn it??

Thank you

Re: 1965 ignition switch

You probably need the bezel tool to tighten the bezel.  Not sure if '65 has the switch retainer like my '67, but that keeps the switch oriented properly in my car.  It's a stamped metal part that locates on the back of the switch and connects to the bottom of the dash via a single sheetmetal screw.

You get in these cars after 50 years and so much has been hacked up, lost, or put back together wrong its often hard to know exactly where to start.  I highly recommend a set of factory assembly manuals.  They are sometimes still hard to decipher, but I've learned a lot about how my car was originally put together, and was even able to make some parts that were missing once I new what I needed the part to do.  I've come to the conclusion that the car was gutted at one point and used as a race car, and then basically thrown back together, half wrong and with a lot of small parts and hardware missing shortly before I bought it.

Re: 1965 ignition switch

The 65 switch mounts different than 67 or later.  There is a bellshaped piece on the back that compresses a spring that is part of the switch to hold it in place once the lugs on each side are indexed into the chrome bezel.  The bezel is supposed to index into the hole in the dash so it cannot rotate.  It sounds like yours may have some wear that let it rotate.
On a 66 truck I had, mine would rotate in the dash as the key was turned, a major headache for those of us who want things "correct".   I pulled the bezel off and coated the back of the chrome flange with super glue and stuck it back together, and it never moved again.

To remove it, first remove the lock cylinder using a paper clip. Then rotate the switch behind the dash (as you compress the spring by pressing the switch towards the bezel) and rotate it until it releases from the slots on the bezel.  Then it will all come apart.
