I parted out a 95 f150 with a 5.0 in it last month. The engine would drop oil pressure if you revved it, so i wanted to see what was going on inside. Took about a half hour power washing it and drained the oil. First clue was the chunks that came out with the oil. Turned the engine over and the pan gasket looked odd. Pulled the pan off and found this. It was a one piece gasket that had split and was half inside and half outside the pan. The oil pickup was about completey clogged with this crud. Not sure what it is really. Kind of breaks down in solvent.
I have no idea what caused the gasket to split.

That ain't good. Glad I removed mine and use only rtv.

Please tell me about this said "RTV". I have built engines that require no oil pan gasket and only used a special anaerobic sealant. Isuzu and Porsche come to mind. I have never thought about using RTV alone on a SB Ford oil pan since it is designed for a gasket. I guess I have never thought of RTV as a gasket material. I guess I like gaskets.

That black crud... does it feel like hard chunks? Might be the valve seals.

The chunks are hard and black, kind of break up in your fingers. I am pulling the heads off tomorrow and see what the top end looks like. Kind of looks like a lot of carbon really, but it was fuel injected so i wouldn't think there would be that much carbon. Don't know if it sucked dirt in where the gasket was bad or what.

That type gasket normally works quite well. However, if someone applied rtv to it, it may have become slippery enough to move around when initially installed.
RTV without a gasket lets it seal without any compression trying to force a gasket out of position. You tighten it wet, then it dries and conforms to everything without being in a compressed condition. Done right, it will NEVER seep or leak.

it did look like a little RTV was stuck to the block.
I think the sludge is just from not changing the oil. Pull the valve covers and they had about 1/8" of sludge stuck to them.
Pulled the heads and the bores look good. Mic'd them all with a bore gauge and the most wear on any of them was .003.

That "un-known" crud you found in the oil pan is called..........."why would I change oil....it will just get dirty again.....besides, the oil FILTER will trap all the bad stuff so why change the oil?"
