What is your winter project plan?

I am installing the 2001 Explorer 5.0 with GT40P heads and 600cfm carb, 4R70W tranny in my 56 F100.
I have already installed a complete brake setup from a 2018 Mustang GT, including the booster and master cylinder, 14” fronts and 13” rears, along with a custom pedal assembly I designed.
I am adding a flip front hinge kit for the hood and a Fox Mustang radiator and shroud.
It will have stainless shorty headers and 2-1/2” x-pipe going into 2018 Mustang GT mufflers.
I am adding brand new bed sides and FORD tailgate with seatbelt latches. I am adding 3” inner fender tubs to the new bedsides.
Interior will be all new custom leather. Will have an upholstery shop do that.
It already has a tilt steering column, but it has slop in it. Either rebuild or replace it.

Already have MII coilover front and four link triangulated rear with 3.70 9” traction lock. 18x8 front wheels and 20x8.5 in the rear. Might add wider rears once I get it tubbed.

Then, for week two...

Apply MS LAW

Still trying to decide on new color. Maybe Porsche Oslo Blue. Trying to find turquose/gray/blue non-metalluc color. Open to suggestions

I will get a build thread going once I dive into this thing after the holidays.

Re: What is your winter project plan?

I'm redoing the trunk mat in my 66. Installing a Hurst shifter and 66 four speed looking lever, installing a floor mounted e brake handle out of a 97 Escort. Some re-wiring and finally I'm going to get rid of all of the clamps on my exhaust and weld it together. Also, not Ford related, I'm going to get my Harley up and running after sitting in the garage for nine years.

Re: What is your winter project plan?

I will be shoveling snow and lots of it!!! At least I would be if it was a normal MT winter.  No snow yet but i'm not complaining.

The real answer to your question"

Mustang:
Finish the coilover front suspension I designed for my 64.5
Install SN95 brakes
Button up a few things on the IRS
Rebuild a T5 converting it from a 165 to a Z-spec
If there is time start in on the rear quarters

Galaxie:
Hook up the trunk solenoid
Drive it between snow storms
swap out the coilover springs for stiffer ones
Get the EFI running on the 351 on the engine stand
tweek a few things on the run stand
In the spring put the EFI 351 in the Galaxie

That seams like enough

Oh I also need to mock up a slave cylinder type hydraulic clutch I designed for a toploader, but I will do that in between the other projects.

Re: What is your winter project plan?

After Jean and I returned from our "Awesome Adventure" I got busy calculated some custom wedges for the UCAs on the Heap.  Some of you are familiar (some personally) with the trouble we had on the FWB Bash trip in 2017.  The problem is that to get the 5 degrees of caster and Zero camber that I want I ended up with nearly 5/8" of shims at the front end of the UCA shafts and nearly 7/16 at the back.  That works out to nearly 3 degrees of angle between the shafts and the mounting surface of the shock tower and that creates a clamping problem on the shims....so, they work loose and fall out.  NOT GOOD!

So I drew it up and had my old friend Ted....remember his display at our Bash in '16... mill a couple of 3 degree wedges that will replace the bulk of the shims.  I tried to do it on my lathe but my little milling attachment wasn't quite up to the task.

So....after Christmas the Heap is going back into the shop for a complete front end rebuild with all MOOG parts and I'll install the wedges at the same time.  Then, if time allows, I plan to get some late Mustang rear brakes installed to replace the Explorer discs which have an internal expanding shop type parking brake that doesn't seem to want to work properly with the dash handle.   And, I also need to replace the weather strip on the right quarter window.  It leaks and whistles and is causing a screeching noise to come from the passenger seat.

Merry Christmas and good shop time to you all.

BB

Re: What is your winter project plan?

After Xmas the Green Beast needs new seats and the front suspension reassembled. I pulled it apart to do the Arning drop, bought some shocks from Bolted-to-Floor and it has sat as other things have come up.

Re: What is your winter project plan?

Since the bash I have already done the Arning drop and the Borgeson steering conversion. I rebuilt the power steering pump twice. One time wrong the second time right. I just ordered parts to get rid of the heater hoses on top of the engine and replace them with pipes. And a canister to replace my orange juice radiator overflow bottle. After that just drive it. If time and funds allow I'll put in the AOD before the bash.

Re: What is your winter project plan?

Not much I'm going to do on the 64.5 convertible, cleaning and polishing getting her ready to put up for sale.

Re: What is your winter project plan?

I've been working on 351W roller for my son's 1968 Mustang.   Haven't done much on my 69 Mustang but at some point next year Id like to get the Wondering figured out in the Suspension and install AC.
Here's pic of the engine I've been working on.

Oh come on Rudi! That easy diy just involves an exacto knife, a cordless drill, some chisels, 2 part epoxy and duct tape. Surely you have those around the garage. Several you tube vids are available for the step by step.

Re: What is your winter project plan?

'67 - rework the doors with power windows, new glass, new weatherstripping, fresh interior paint, new door panels
     - redo the rear seat with new upholstery and foam
     - lever parking brake

'89 - complete the 331 build
      - paint the engine bay
      - get the front end back together

Re: What is your winter project plan?

My winter project started with buying an AOD to stock Mustang shifter rod, then modifying it so it would fit and function properly. The  shifter lever now travels the full slot distance, but doesn't get fully set in reverse for the back up lights and camera to turn on. I think I'll need to clearance the gate for the back up light switch to align and turn on.

Next up I'll remove the Milodon 8 qt oil pan and install the oem pan to see if I can stop my irritating oil leak.

I need to pull the third member and adjust the ring and pinion to get rid of an annoying 60-70 mph whine.

And I think I'll just buy some interior door trim panels instead of waiting on my son to finish the custom panels.

Re: What is your winter project plan?

Help a pal-o-mine install his re-built 289 that's been sitting for 3-4 years. Get it running. (gonna do the duraspark springs trick...WYAIT).
May try the trick DC does to his Mustangs......make the  top  section of the radiator "front piece"(forget the name) removable to ease install- even with headers installed!.......we'll see

Bob, I'm not sure if its the same on a 351, but on a 302, the 2 larger bolts at the rear of the sump, don't go into blind holes .... they need thread sealant.
I've seen them leak, and look like a rear main leak.
Pull a couple of bolts and use a screwdriver to see if they are blind, or open to the crankcase.

Thanks for the heads up Barry, but been there, done that. And they are thru holes.

Re: What is your winter project plan?

I feel bad.  Nothing I want to do.

Mine is exactly where I want it. - Outside of 50 years and 500,000 mi.  Lots of creaks and groans.

Injected 351 Windsor where I want it.  T5, Recaro seats.  Rust fixed.  Paint good.  4 wheel disk brakes.  Power R&P steering.  16" wheels.   Arning drop. 1" lowering GT springs front.  Reverse eye rears.  Traction masters & all the appropriate chassis stiffening parts.

Just drive it!

Re: What is your winter project plan?

I should complete the hydroboost install on the 65 Coupe. That requires cutting a hose to length and installing it, so I might finish this winter. I guess I should install the gauge cluster in my avatar since I gave the stock one to Mochaman.

Re: What is your winter project plan?

Get the subframe kit installed, and then line up a shop for the custom exhaust.

Re: What is your winter project plan?

My plans are to get my damn Lightning going so I can focus on my Mustang.

Just have to put the bed back on, do exhaust, get blower/intercooler piping done, and finish up the massive amount of wiring for the Megasquirt.

Re: What is your winter project plan?

Make 1/2 lowering blocks to center the rear end in the car to eliminate wheel rub as the last thing before finding suitable rims with more back spacing.
Stop the leaks in the front and back glass.Install a HiPo Boss style Alternator pulley. The belt will not stay tight for very long before it squeals on start-up.
Pull 3rd member to inspect gears, I have a odd/howling sound as I let off the gas above 75. Chunk was bought used, I painted and installed.
New weather strips on vent windows. It causes the same screeching from the passenger seat like BB'sComplete interior - Interior lights, Paint and install upper console, Paint seat belt sashes, Scuff plates
Install electric window kit.
Install oil pressure and water temp gauges.Mount the back up camera.Install the choke on the carb.
Send the Speedo and dash clock off to Rocketman CCI for refurbishing
Fog light kit someday.

I did get the second chrome valve cover installed.

I know I won't get all of this completed during the 3 weeks of winter we have around here, but I can try.
