I started putting together the e-brake cables on my 64.5 today. I am using the horseshoe shaped 66 style routing system as MS suggests with my Cobra cables in the rear.
When I put the groove in the equalizer lever into the cross member and hooked up the spring, the tension on the spring was so tight that it pulled the equalizer lever out position and pulled the whole equalizer lever towards the passenger side of the mount, sort of jamming the whole thing in the mount.
I don’t have the cable through the horseshoe connected to the rear cables yet. Should I do that before connecting the spring? If the cables are connected, will it stop the spring from pulling the equalizer lever out of position?m
Tnx!

I seem to recall that it's possible to get the location for the spring, and the rod going to the horseshoe reversed.

The spring was in the hole closet to the driver's side, the rod to the horseshoe was in the hole closest to the passenger side.

That is the correct locations. If you have the other end of the spring in the correct place, its sorta gotta be right once the cables are in place.
Good luck.

Of course the spring has alot of pull. I think you are doing this in reverse order. Hook up the cables and install the spring LAST. Adjust the cables to zero tension only. NO preload. If the levers on the calipers start to move AT ALL as you tighten the cables, the rear brakes will drag as you drive.

Thanks, I'll give it a whirl with the cables connected first and see how it goes.

You are correct, sir! I put the cables on and then put the spring on and it was fine. Now I just need to get them adjusted properly and figure out why the hand lever has stopped "clicking" when I pull it out. When I pulled the hand lever, I got about 4 inches of travel on the hand lever and it seemed to lock and hold, but no more click, click, click when I pull it out.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
