Re: Wow....a custom hood scoop

Yeah, couldn't recall the zact number but thought it was around 6200.  Butt (TS&T) taking the ratio of crank pulley to water pump pulley in to account makes that fan spin well over 8K.

Re: Wow....a custom hood scoop

I seem too remember the Derale clutch fan I have on Bonnie 67 stated Max rpm was 4400. With the clutch slippage It was going to be close to that at times

My friend said that fan...according to Summit...is rated for 8K, Butt (TS&T) with the stock Explorer water pump pulley its possible that the fan hit above 8500 with no load on a stuck throttle and the computer shutting off fuel at 6250, minus whatever slippage the clutch has.  Still.......

Re: Wow....a custom hood scoop

If it is “rated” for 8,500, it shoukd easily withstand 10,000 for a short period of time.  Proper engineering dictates a safety factor be built in and tested before a rating is applied.

Is this fan designed for the Fox/Explorer type fan clutch?  If so, was the failure of the hub eminating from the bolt holes?  If the installer used bolts that bottomed out before the fan was clamped tight by the bolt, I do not see how that could be blamed on the fan itself.  That would cause the forces generated front to rear, by constant change rpm and air flow, to make the hub pivot on those loose connections, just like bending a piece of metal back and forth until it breaks.  If the bolts bottom out in a blind hole before they clamp down, the installer would certainly think he was finished tightening them.  A WARNING LABEL, designed by the appropriate attorney working for the fan company, would be in order, at least!

The Summit reverse rotation I had referred to is the type designed to bolt directly onto the water pump pulley.  Same design as normal rotation flex fan, without a clutch.  Those should not be an issue.

Re: Wow....a custom hood scoop

Upon inspection it was determined that the bolts were NOT too long and had NOT bottomed.

That's a really nice speed hole in your hood.  You just don't see those very often any more :-)

Those fans must have a serious design problem!!!  Sure would like to see a pic of all the pieces, if any were retrieved.

It has always been a rule to NEVER stand inline with a rotating fan, for this very reason.  But, I have never seen it happen!

Re: Wow....a custom hood scoop

Maybe off topic, but a few times flying, I ended up with the window seat sitting inline with the turbo prop. Disturbing things going on out there.

Re: Wow....a custom hood scoop

Back to the custom hood, many years ago a friend (and not a car guy) had a strange noise coming from under the hood of his 65 Galaxie (daily driver).  He had the hood up and was leaning over from the front revving the engine trying to determine where the noise was coming from.  He gave up, closed the hood, drove a short distance and a fan blade came through the hood.  Water pump shaft broke. Very lucky guy.

Re: Wow....a custom hood scoop

Damn, such a nice little Falcon Jeannie has. How hard is it to find an original red-painted Falcon hood?

Not long after they bought the car the 260 had a little engine fire so he had to repaint the hood and one fender.  Then about a year ago he found a very nice hood on C-list for $100 and grabbed it....Ft. Collins, I think.

So now he has a hood and remaining paint so it could be way worser.

Now I remember the story. I'm glad he has another hood. That Falcon is so sweet!
