Ive got my 351W built, jba headers, c4 trans,Ron Morris adjustable mounts, and manual rack/pinion Ive heard many diff methods of doing the installation. Can anyone tell me the process of the install?
Do I bolt headers on and lower down in, or lower motor in below mounts and bolt headers on then lift into place?
Any advise is appreciated

Any reputable Mustang vendor can get you one. They are pretty commonplace. I have used Mustangs Plus, NPD, and American Mustang with good results. Make sure you clean it out before you use it. My latest had some crud that clogged up my gas filter. I would prefer using something like paint thinner. I would not trust water; it might cause rust later. And, I do not like to use gas - no reason other than it can be dangerous and it stinks.
Get a new one. Never trust a used gas tank unless you can look at it and verify it is not rusted out.
Get the sending unit for the same year. They are different for different years.
Oh, I hope your headers are for a 351w. They are different for a 289/302.
It's been so long that I cannot remember about motor installation. I think you need to do the installation with the headers installed. Not much roon there to slide them in later.

When I installed the 302 in my 65 FB, I bolted in the T5 with the engine sitting on the floor with some lumber under the mounts, where I could ensure everything was lined up properly. I then used one of those portable engine hosts and a load leveler set so the trans was tail down. Headers off. Slid in pretty easily. Used a wheel dolly to support the tailshaft of the trans at the end. Did it by myself. I realize the 351 is a little wider, but see no reason you can't use the same procedure.

I never did it THIS WAY butt......
.DC (one of the regulars on here) swears he cuts the "bar" on the radiator support and slides his engine in from the front! Remove the grille/radiator/etc.... He sez he can slide it in WITH the headers attached....by himself... in no time! Then re-installs the bar on the rad support(makes it removable). Granted he races his Mustang butt the install will be the same regardless.
Give it a try!

I have installed 351W in a 66 many times. Leave the headers off the car. Leave the motor mounts off.
Set the motor in place with the hoist. I am usually doing engine and trans at one time, which requires the engine to almost be vertical during install. I remove the valve covers because mine hit the brake booster doing it this way. Also remove front crank pulley before you begin. You do not have to remove the Shelby style export brace. Miraculously, it is not in the way if valve covers are removed.
Once the engine is hanging in space, about where it belongs, then stick the headers in there and attach to the heads. Then install the motor mounts.
Assuming you will be using NEW motor mounts, before putting the engine in, be sure you can easily get them to align and bolt up to the block AND to the car frame mounts. This will save you a ton of headaches, because they never fit right out of the box.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
