Brake Light Switch on Mustang Steve Pedal Assembly

I’m going nuts here trying to get my brake light switch to work. It’s on my ‘65 coupe and I’m using the mustang Steve 5 speed pedal assembly and power brake setup.

The brake light wiring is good, tail light buckets are new. If I manually push the switch in, brake lights light up. When I install it on the post on the pedal assembly with shims and all, it doesn’t work. It’s as if the switch isn’t getting pushed in by the brake booster rod. I’ve tried a manual brake switch for a ‘65 and now a power brake light switch for a ‘70 mustang. I can’t seem to get it to work. Any input you guys could offer?

The 70 power brake switch is my preference. It has a lighter spring that works better with power assist.  No shimming is normally required. Does your switch clear the steering column ok?

Re: Brake Light Switch on Mustang Steve Pedal Assembly

The switch in this pic is a 70 mustang power brake switch. It clears the steering column but only if it’s parallel with the floor, in which case it doesn’t work. If I clock the end with the prongs downward towards the floor the switch works but it hits the column and then tapping the brakes 2 or 3 causes the switch to pivot back up again to a position that doesn’t work.

Let me know if the pic link doesn’t work

Re: Brake Light Switch on Mustang Steve Pedal Assembly

Wondering why the switch is angled downward?   The boosters usually have a vertical plat end on the shaft, or a slightly angled upward flat.  The simple solution is to mark the area on the tube where it hits, then loosen and rotate the steering column tube so you can get the required area pointing downward, then place a dent in the column tube for clearance.  Then, rotate it back in place and tighten it up.  The column is 2"+ diameter, and the shaft is only 3/4", so there is plenty of room to dent the column without any interference occurring.

Another possible way is to loosen the four booster studs, pull the booster as high as possible and then retighten the nuts.  If your firewall holes are a bit oversized, the booster can slip down a bit before you get it tightened in place.
I used to have the dent suggestion in the instructions for the power brake kits.  Wondering if it is still in there?  I hope your booster is working well for you.
