Fresh Rebuild, Edel 750 --- READY TO DRIVE THE CAR OFF A CLIFF

I cant seem to own this 69 FB for more than a week problem free.....I cant enjoy it, 14yrs of constant up hill battle!

just had open heart surgery on the motor which was rebuilt 7 summers ago, cost me a fortune....drove it for 2 days and return ps line split (their fault) now My Edel (which is the first time ever using it) STOPPED IDLING!

was running Great and Awesome, I love it over Holley but it just stopped Idling!  dies out!

Ive only noticed VERY WET secondaries!?????!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?  Why all of the sudden are the secondaries WET during idle and how is that possible?  Would That Air/Vacuum operated Flap Being Removed cause that?????

Ive tried 100,000 mixture screw positions and even blew them out and they are breathing......Nothing was changed from running Perfectly to Not aside from the secondary air butterflies............HELP!?!?!?!?!?!

Tell me again why you removed the seconday "flap" ?  I seem to recall that is pretty important to the carbs/secondaries operation.
(I can tell you a "trick" concerning the flap and the counter-weight butt it needs to be installed and operating).
You ck. for vacuum leak? That's usually the FIRST thing to establish be cause its gonna operate like poop iif its not sealed up properly.

Yep
What’s up with the secondary flap mod?  Never heard of doing that...

Also, have you ever cleaned out or replaced the gas tank?

Re: Fresh Rebuild, Edel 750 --- READY TO DRIVE THE CAR OFF A CLIFF

Fresh Rebuild on the Engine Sally, shes sealed up perfectly, but I did find the problem!  the Needle Floats were not seating....which means the floats somehow were bent....it was my last attempt, I was losing my patience completely, but then discovered that...had the Cover off 4 times in 1.5hrs....

MS I have new tank (newer)....

As for the removing of the secondary weighted flaps, im assuming it is now the cause of my WOT Bog.......All RPM ranges under 4000......guess it needs to be there.....I was thinking of delaying when the secondaries open by bending that connecting rod, but why fight the designers, going to re-rivet the weighted butterflies back on......

Re: Fresh Rebuild, Edel 750 --- READY TO DRIVE THE CAR OFF A CLIFF

I always consider that the original designers (Carter in this case, I think) probably spent a million $$ or so figuring out how to keep the parts list to a minimum so they could save a few million $$ over the mfg life of the product.  I'm usually smart enough to know that I'm not smart enough to out smart the original designers.  Tuning is one thing...re-design is something else.

Have you done anything with the step up springs? Was you idle mixture set up correctly with a vacuum gauge so that you have the best vacuum at the proper idle? The off idle bog can be corrected or at least lessened with the proper step up springs.

Re: Fresh Rebuild, Edel 750 --- READY TO DRIVE THE CAR OFF A CLIFF

I don't know where you heard about removing the secondary air valve but that's not a good idea. It will give you one hell of a bog when the secondaries are punched open, that's for sure. That valve controls the secondary tip-in rate (rate of flow increase as RPMs increase) and if you want to modify it you have to modify the weights on it (usually not necessary). If you are seeing drip from the venturi nozzles then one of the following apply:

- High float level(s)
- High fuel pressure (4 psi is plenty)
- Leaking needle/seat(s) or bent floats

Put the secondary air valve back in place and test again!

I don't know if it's still in print, but the Super Tuning and Modifying Carter Carburetors book is a great resource for information about using and modifying these carbs. Dave Emanuel is the author.
