Lost two tires today, all within 250 feet

I pulled the convertible from the house garage to the shop today to get it ready to pull the engine and tranny, which have been sold.  Both front tires were blown out and departed the rims and the car before I could pull it onto the lift.  I have never experienced that before!

I'm curious to know more about the cause.  Be sure to update this once you understand why that happened.


1968 T-code Coupe with a 302.  Nice car, no show stopper for sure, but I like it.

I think it was that the tires were quite old and dry rotted, even  though they still had the little nubs on the tread from being nearly “new”.  Both had major blowouts and tread separation, like a 6” x 6” piece blown off. I decided to drive it with flats to put it on the lift so it would be easier to jack up the car.
I think the date codes were from 1997
It has been parked quite a while. Looks like they parked it because the brakes failed big time.

Yeah, can't make a turn at all on a flat tire.

That is weird.  Do you have any 'after' pictures of the tires?


65 Fastback, 351W, 5-speed, 4 wheel discs, 9" rear,  R&C Front End.

No brackets for the braces and no holes. August 1964 build date. I was under the impression those may have come along later in the game, but am not sure. I plan to remove that cheap chrome export brace and install a real one and leave it at that.

Yup, you're right.  I didn't realize it was an early 65.  Those braces were added in the later 65 convertible models.  Thanks!

Wow, that still is weird.  While I would guess age is a factor, maybe the hot Texas weather was a factor also (?).

Weird yes, butt not unusual for that brand and model. I had one come apart while parked on a project Mustang.

I thought the same thing when I saw MS's photo. I've bought old non-BFG tires and had them hold up for decades. I have a BMW 2002 that's been sitting since 2000 (yeah, I like to age 'em buh fore I git to 'em) and the tars are fine (by comparison.) The only tire I've ever seen come apart like that was a BFG Radial TA that didn't look bad before it completely fell apart.

The  BFG Radial T/A  generally have a bad reputation..
Other than a set of BFG  GForce Comp2 the only tires I’ve ever had were Radial T/A, I’m on my third set right now.
The only valid reason I have is that they seem to work for my driving style.
I’d go back to the g-Force if we’re still available in the 15” sizes I want. They definitely were my hands down  favourite for looks and performance.

These BFG’s looked new until the day they… didn’t.

I mistyped BFG as NFG the first pass in this post. Thinking that would probably be a better name for them if you think about it.
