I was 16 yrs old, at Green Valley Raceway in Smithfield, Texas, February 14 of 1965. There .Shelby had a King Cobra (Cooper Monaco w/289 Cobra ENGINE ) and a GT 350 driven by Ken Miles.(the scene of the famous hop photo.) it was the first time a GT350R ever turned a wheel and anger and raced. Yeah he kicked -oh no I used a word I shouldn't have- and everybody who drove a Cobra was my Hero.

I was around at the time and other than a friends wife having a 66-6 convertible I paid little attention to Mustangs .
My head at the time was filled with things that had two wheels or wings.

MICKEY THOMPSON !!.. some of you youngsters may axe..
This is one of his inventions(remember this is the early 60's!)      A set of HEMI heads for a 427 FE engine !!
WHY you may axe...since the 427 light-weight Gal's were the king of the SS/Stocks and NASCAR....
WHY...cause he could...cause he just wanted to !!
He was wayyyy outta the box thinker

Sal - that was difinately a different time, very exciting, seemed every young guy had some hot car that went around tearing up the streets, and/or track.

Oh...I remember it well - Didn't Maurice Chevalier sing a song like that?  Stone-Woods-Cook, Bean Bandits, Ivo w/4 Buicks, Duntov cams, the list goes on.  It was great living in SoCal in those days.  Keith Black too.  I even dated his daughter a couple of times.

I was driving a 59 Austin 850 (precursor to the Mini Cooper) with a built MG1100 engine putting out about 100 hp.  It would do 110mph.  It would beat any sports car of the era.  Unfortunately, I took a corner too fast one day and pranged it.  But you should see burning rubber from the front tires - all 10" of them!

I just hope the current enthusiast are enjoying today with their performance cars.  With the speed at which all devices (cars especially) are being networked together, I predict it won't be long until the new cars are all being monitored by the MAN 24/7.  The MAN will know where the cars are and how they are being driven.  Unless forced to by the MAN, I don't see myself ever owning one of those cars regardless of how nice they might otherwise be.

And if you think it won't be allowed because of our freedoms, then perhaps you are still under the idea that our freedoms are safe.  ....sad but true.   Back to my first statement, I just hope the current enthusiast are not taking today for granted.

1968 T-code Coupe with a 302.  Nice car, no show stopper for sure, but I like it.

Many new vehicles are currently being monitored and some manufacturers provide info back to insurance companies.
And there is a 'push' for having the vehicle check one's speed against the posted speed limit one is driving in, and warn the driver before taking action to slow the car.  This technology can be applied to the other attributes vehicles monitor today, lane changing, following too close, etc, etc.
It is a scary thing we could be entering.

Some more info to follow BobE post. My neighbor is a mechanic specialized in electrical. My wife's Grand Cherokee posted some codes so I had him take a look. He fixed the problem and when I asked what happened he said well on January 7th she was going 45 headed north it was 85 degrees and one of the sensors failed. Welcome to the digital age
