Has anyone used one from a Mustang or Explorer?
Late 90’s to mid 2000’s?
If so what year?
Details?
Offline
No, but do a good write up with pics Dan to make the job easier for us!

I've looked at those systems and I don't see any reason one wouldn't work. It's all electronic so you'll need the "computer" that runs it. You'll have to supply it with data from a VSS and some other inputs such as brake pedal and clutch pedal position data.

From what I understand, some cruise controls are integrated into the vehicle ecm.
Are there ways around it?
Kinda like the electric power steering limp mode.

If I ever add cruise to mine, i'll use the stuff from my 95 donor. EEC IV, and I think EEC V, dont need any input from the ECU.

I can't say for certain beyond '93, but The Fox systems were stand alone. Sometimes they were dealer installed. There are usually dealer kits on eBay for sale for them. I don't think the '94-'95 ones were either because the only major differences in the ECM for them was a switch to OBDII and integration of cooling fan control. I lost interest in the cars once the 4.6 came out, so I can't say from '96 onwards how integrated they are, though by 2005 I would assume they were integrated the way all vehicles were.

I put an after market on my Mustang. Uses magnets for the vss and the controller is self contained. Works good.

I will have to look into these options.
Originally, I was going to install the factory 92 mustang cruise control.
It’s just big and bulky, but it works.
Are there aftermarket units that are compatible with factory Ford cruise control switches?
I really don’t want it on the turn signal lever or just a box on the dashboard.
I have other ideas...can’t do it the easy way.

I used a "Rostra" cruise control with it's dedicated turn signal mounted switches, screws right into the thingee in the column. It is an electronic operated servo. I once tried a vacuum operated CC but it was too weak to operate the Holley.
When I had the C4 I used magnets on the driveshaft but now with the AOD it uses the VSS output.

Rudi or (your name here)😁
Can factory style switches ( mid 80’s to mid 90’s) from a Ford Lincoln Mercury be used with Rostra style or other aftermarket cruise control?
They were all the same, buttons were shaped differently and location differed as well.
Electrically, all the same resistances connected to factory cruise.
I will be using VSS on T5 transmission inline with speedometer cable. Just like on foxbody.

I would assume that switches are switches. If you know which wires do what you should be able to use any switch you want. I don't know about other Fords, but the Mustangs used two 2 button switches mounted in the steering wheel in the Fox generation.
Offline
Factory switches have resistance built in for each function to input to Ford factory cruise module.
Just not sure if it can be modified to provide simple on/off if required for Rostra system?
Or can they be used as is?
I haven’t run across wiring schematic of Rostra switches ( internally).
There’s plenty of wire diagrams for entire system...no details.
Offline
Rostra switches are simple on/off with no resistance.

Thats the ticket Gary, with that schematic you should be able to connect with most pre computer factory controls.

Great information Gary. Thank you.
Your switch is in a box on dash?
Rudi
The stalk you have replaced your old one entirely?

Original fitment was the switch box located on the dash. With the addition of AC the center vents filled the area where the switch box was. I have now converted to the turn signal stalk switching.

Gary did that just replace the existing lever?
Or was cutting required?

Yes, Rostra sells a dedicated stalk with integrated controls. It has the proper threads that screws right into the original turn signal mechanism. Makes for a nice clean almost O/E looking installation.

I had a shorter version of the 66 stalk that I cut to mount the controls.

I Rostra in my car using the clamp on stalk mount but put it in my consol. But anyway there are pictures of all their switches on their web site. At one time I was thinking of changing steering columns for a moderne on so I could have all my switches on the steering wheel. My ideas however are smarter than my brain.

I checked their web site and did not see the threaded stalk listed, might be worth a call to them to make sure if that’s the one you want.
They show one that slides over a cut down original stalk, many options.

Looks like I will have to do more research and development.
Are we related HudginJ3?😁

Of course we are! I don't think it's a good idea to talk about it in public. I have a 78? Ford horn pad that has the buttons on it. Ya want it? It's green.

You said it brother😁
Hold off on the steering wheel for now.
Thanks for the offer.

Barry,
2000 Explorer
How many terminals are on your servo motor? Mine = 10
How many wires? Mine = 8
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
