Big Bang Theory...Or Result

Gary RV6 thought y'all would enjoy this story and pics. While I was at RV6's place picking up the Porsche, he told a story about blowing out his mufflers by turning off the ignition, then turning it back on. His intention was to make the exhaust pop, but Gary goes big on everything.

Last week I was doing 55 down a local road when the ignition power cut off. After a moment it came back on and produced a rather loud bang. I have a coil kill switch and think the terminal connection was loose. A couple of days ago I was trouble shooting why the motor was running crappy. I was under the back of the car at the filter for the electric fuel pump and thought about Gary's muffler experience. So I thought I'd take a look at my mufflers. OY!

Good thing I've got a couple extra sets of mufflers, cuz I can't remember which parts I've bought and put away.

Re: Big Bang Theory...Or Result

I guess that air/fuel mixture is going to burn somewhere since it didn't burn in the combustion chamber.  I'm guessing the internal baffles inside those mufflers are blown apart and blocking flow some now.

1968 T-code Coupe with a 302.  Nice car, no show stopper for sure, but I like it.

Re: Big Bang Theory...Or Result

Bearing did a nice job on the muffs. I'm proud of him.

We used to do that all the time in high school. It does not work on electronic fuel injected engines.
My wife had never heard of such a thing so I showed her how it worked. I even stressed that if you turn off the ignition for to long you could blow up your mufflers.
The story I told Bearing; Carolyn is following me home one night and idiot between us was riding my rear down the long grade. I turned off the ignition, counted and turned it back on. Kablewee the whole back up the 67 jumped  in the ensuing fireball. Totally ruptured the mufflers. Never did see the guy behind me anymore

Re: Big Bang Theory...Or Result

Back in 1973, I did that unintentionally to the muffs on my 65 Cutlass.  The main power to the ignition would short out where it went across the steering column, causing ignition to shut off, typically as I pulled out to pass another car.  When it decided to restart- kaboom!!!   I drove it like that for a year until I figured out the wire problem.   I saw the car in a junkyard several years later while looking for Mustang parts. Not wrecked... just junked.   Still had the expanded mufflers on it.

Re: Big Bang Theory...Or Result

My guess... it collapsed the inner tubes on that turbo muffler and then everything that wasn’t welded plugged the outlet after the rapid expansion of the mixture.

Re: Big Bang Theory...Or Result

It's not a turbo muffler, it's a Walker Cadillac unit. I just love doing muffler work without a lift.

Re: Big Bang Theory...Or Result

Sarcasm Bob??
I once cranked the car thinking I had'ta drag fuel from the tank ... pumped my heart out on the pedal.
Realised I'd left the coil wire of the distibutor, got out and put it on, I'd left the key on, and when I put it on, it blew a muffler open .... looked like a flat piece of sheet metal. Yes, I did jump a bit.

Re: Big Bang Theory...Or Result

Yes Barry, that was sarcasm about working on the exhaust without a lift.

Well... no real damage inside that can't be seen from the outside. The 1-5/8" I.D. tubes inside gots to be stealing some power.

Re: Big Bang Theory...Or Result

Finally wrapped up the new muff install last night, and boy did I sure slept well. I reinstalled some Dynomax stainless straight thru mufflers I'd used before, which then were dumped at the axle. With them going out the side now, the drone is gone and level of sound is much reduced. They're just a tad louder than the large 1-5/8" Caddy muffler, and I can still carry on a conversation in the cab. Now that the work is done, I'm kinda glad I damaged the muffs.

So why the strange engine operation?

Well... the non start issue was either points or condenser. But since the points plastic isolater that the condenser fastens to broke, I replaced them both at once, which cured that problem.

The over heating was a result of only one fan running, which was caused a couple of shorts, one to a buss bar that powers the electric fans and electric choke. The other was internal in the inline fuse holder for the fan relay. And yes, I do know the benefits of a stock fan.

As far as it running crappy, I not know brother. Maybe my car doesn't like to run well at over 215°. But I do know the following is a true story. Before I installed the mufflers, the tranny didn't want to shift into third until floored at 65 mph, and sometimes not at all. It also didn't want to run well at low rpms. Once I removed those GM mufflers she's been a happy girl, shifting correctly and running fine.

Re: Big Bang Theory...Or Result

That's all there was to those Caddy muffs?! No glass.....sound dampner....nut'in?
Wonder how if would have run (and sounded) with  say 2"  internal pipes (with holes of course)
Maybe increased the size of the holes in the baffles...... Would be a lot of work (on your back) to put modified caddy muffz back on Mustang.......'just to see' what difference it woulda made.

Re: Big Bang Theory...Or Result

Bob, here's my only muffler story:
My Dad worked for Chrysler for 32 years and his pride an joy was his 74 New Yorker Broughm that he followed down the assembly line when being built. It had a 440 for pulling his trailer. A couple of years after he passed away my mom wanted to get rid of the car so she gave it to me. One day I came out from work, slid into the yacht and turned the key. There was a tremendous explosion followed by the sound of open pipes. One of the guys came running over to see what had happened. It blew both mufflers apart and was later determined to be caused by worn shaft bearings in the distributor... in about an 9 year old car. BANG, lub, lub, lub. I haven't driven a Mopar since.
