Whirling sound on shifting

A peculiar sound has developed only when the clutch is depressed, and I'm shifting gears.  there is a whirling sound.  This sound disappears when the clutch is fully engaged and in gear.  What could be the possible cause?  Car is a 1998 Mustang Cobra stock with 100,000 miles on it.  95% of it highway driving.  Very very seldom driven in the city or any other situation that requires frequent shifting.  All ideas welcome.

Re: Whirling sound on shifting

Pilot bearing  or throw out bearing would be my first guesses.

Re: Whirling sound on shifting

Sounds like a throw out bearing to me.

Throwout bearing

Money you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted money... unless your wife finds out.

Re: Whirling sound on shifting

Agree it's most likely the throwout bearing.

Re: Whirling sound on shifting

Butt (TS&T) were it mine I would change out the throw-out bearing AND the pilot bearing with 100K on it.

Throwout bearing would be my guess.
But as BB suggests, change the pilot bearing also.

Re: Whirling sound on shifting

At 100k miles, I’d probably change all of it.
Probably cheaper to get an entire clutch kit.
Throwout bearing might be included in some kits.

Re: Whirling sound on shifting

Thank you all for input. I think I will opt for the clutch kit. Getting there is too much work to revisit if clutch goes

Re: Whirling sound on shifting

Should go without saying, but get the flywheel surfaced as well.
