I've been watching a thread on another forum about some aftermarket headlights. They're Toyota units and apparently on some sort of clearance sale. They aren't LED nor are they sealed beam - they have the separate replaceable bulbs in the housing.
I decided to take the plunge and ordered the part number. They came in yesterday and I'm pretty amazed. I received 2 headlights, complete with bulbs, a wiring harness fully populated with relays, fuses and connectors, a bag of zip ties, and instructions with a wiring diagram. All of this cost me $23.
I'm very happy with this. The parts are all OE quality. Shootfahr, the harness alone is worth the $23 - it's a ton better than the one I bought from somewhere else for about the same price so even if I don't install the headlights, I can use the harness to connect the halogen sealed beams I currently have installed. If you've been looking for a headlight upgrade, this could be it (unless you have a 69 Mustang). Visit your friendly Toyota dealer today and order part number 81110-60P70. :-)

toyotapartsdeal.com is an online source with prices that probably beat the local deal even with shipping. Or print out their price and take it to the local dealer and get them to match it. That kit is $16.49 on the website.

I didn't know about the parts deal website. I tried a different site (autoparts.toyota.com) - the nearest dealer that showed was 5 hours away (the one I finally called to order it is an hour away). So yes, if that works better for you, definitely use it. It's a screaming deal either way.

I only know about it because I own a Toyota and the local dealership can be very proud of their parts. Seems an industry wide thing now. I just priced some stuff at Tasca online for one of my F250s and took the part numbers and prices to the dealership I use and the parts counter lady was like "this is what we charge other dealerships", to which I said "And?" She's like "I'd have to get authorization". To which I said "And?" Parts manager got super close to the online price, and what I don't know if they realized was that shipping would have been absurd due to one part's size, so I probably wasn't buying it online anyway. To me its just bad business practice to try and charge everyone full on list price for everything. Parts is a volume business. Plenty of places online make great money charging 10-15% over cost for OEM parts. It seems like now they aren't selling as many new vehicles because the price of those is insane, so they are trying to make up the difference by inflating parts prices. I greatly prefer OEM parts for most things, and am willing to pay a bit more for them, but the greed anymore is a bit out of hand.
Anyway, sorry for the tirade, just what we are all thinking I'm sure.

That is a great deal!

JonHa - thank you for this info.
I just Googled "Toyota part 81110-60P70", and saw price ranging from like $15 up to $140 ... Wow!

No worries. Insofar as costs for parts (and service), be thankful that you don't own a Mercedes. I'm gathering supplies to change the fuel filter and the dealer parts department charged me $30 for 4 little hose clamps. After I got home I found out that I could have had them for about $2 each plus shipping from other sites. I am kicking my dumb @$$

Do you have a vehicle to cross reference the part to?
Just wondering.

So, what do the lights look like? Round sealed beams or some vehicle-specific thing?

I read someplace that they are intended as replacements for the Toyota Landcruiser. I think the specific model is the FJ series. The unit's equivalent to a 7" sealed beam lamp.

They look like 7" round sealed beam headlights. The only tiny difference (aside from these not being sealed beam units) is around the edge of the lens, which comes straight out from the rear cone before arcing across the front of the lens rather than tapering in toward the rear cone at the edges. You can see it pretty well in the photos I posted.

Thanks John, I had forgotten about these.
Thanks TKO for sharing the website.
$16.49 + small shipping fee and quality product history.
The relay harness is worth a try for this price.

If you don't care about the flat lens look, they'll be a straight swap. I prefer a convex lens.

There's no fitment guide on any website, so it seems these are a Toyota universal replacement that probably fits any vehicle that ever used a 7" round headlight. I'd have to measure to be sure, but they do look exactly like the headlights in my '07 FJ Cruiser.

John Ha - have you installed these yet? Just wondering if there is phyisical issues with fitment in the Mustang's OEM headlight housing.

No, not yet - too many other things to finish ahead of this. But there are others who have successfully installed them on the other forum.
The only issue I've seen reported is from someone who had an aftermarket harness. He said that the headlight connectors in that harness didn't mate with the lamps in the kit. But that's a debit against the aftermarket harness in his car rather than the kit (which comes with the appropriate connectors and harness).
There are several threads discussing this topic in the other forum, FYI.

YEARS ago I bought some sorta like 'em from Mr. Tim. He got a sweet deal from somebody and several of us got "hooked-up"
Mine turned out GRRRREAT! Improved the 'out-look' when driving and looks "almost" like the Lucas head lights on some of the old skool custom Mustangs....

PS How is Mr. Tim BTW ?!...Does he do text ?...I have an old telephone # I might try.....

I'd definitely recommend either using the link TKOPerformance provided in post 2 above, or ordering it through your nearest Toyota dealer.

SPEAKING OF HEAD LIGHTS.......
I think that's the high beam only kit though, and I'm not sure those would fit the Mustang buckets without some serious work.

John Ha - thank you for this info. If the electrical connector doesn't mate up the OEM connector, I'll just splice it through.
Sal - another LOL, those are some headlights!

Looks like what I bought a couple of years back for my build. I’ll have to check the parts numbers.
I bought a wire harness with relays that plugs into the factory harness. I bought it from NPD.

Thanks John, for the info. Put an order in on the site TKO posted, thanks TKO too.

I went to the toyotapartsdeal.com site and filled out an order for the light kit. When I got to the checkout, I discovered that the shipping cost alone was going to be more than the cost I paid the dealer ($23 including tax) to get the light kit.
So it might be better to just do a screen print of the toyotapartsdeal.com price page and take that to your dealer to see if they'll price match.
I thought this might be a valuable point of information to add here.

That is a good point. You may also be able to get them on eBay at a slightly better price with shipping included. A lot of eBay sellers for OEM parts will include free shipping.
I actually had to get a new shifter for my FJ this week and was trying to get it ASAP and always like to give local businesses my business so I went to the local dealership. The counter guy says they can have it tomorrow. I said, what's the price? He says $501.03. I say, dude, that's full on list and I can buy it online for $331.04 you've got to get me a lot closer to that price if you want my business. "Oh, that's the best I can do. We sell everything at list." So I said, then you'll never get my business nor the business of anyone I know. Great business model BTW. Then I sat in the parking lot in full view of his desk and ordered the part from Ourisman Toyota in Richmond who said I'd have it at the latest Thursday. Cost with shipping was $358.22. I mean, seriously? Everyone knows about the internet now. Do they really expect to do any business in parts? I saved $142.81 by waiting at most 2 more days. If I was really in a bind I could have rented a car for 2 days and it would still have been cheaper! Then you hear people complain about how e-commerce is ruining their businesses. If you want my business you have to earn it, and work to keep it. You don't do that by price gouging.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
