My new shed

40' across the door side, 60' deep. I'm finally getting a decent shed that'll fit a hoist.
A question on the hoist, all the affordable ones, seem to have air operated lock releases. Is this a problem with the air hose laying across the floor? I want to be able to move the 4 post hoist around, so a fixed ceiling mount drop won't work for me.
I've thought about a small pressure tank on wheels that I can take to wherever the hoist is. Or mount something like a fire extinguisher converted to a pressure tank, to the hoist. How thirsty is the air consumption of the latch release?

Re: My new shed

I'd put one retractable air hose reel on each of the three walls without the door. So looks real good. Kudos.

Re: My new shed

Very happy for you, Barry, butt (TS&T) I'm all jello. I agree with BB2, a retractable reel on the three walls.  You're gonna want the air handy around the shop anyway.  DIODIR.
I don't know anything about the air release system...don't think I'd prefer that, myself.  I have a Direct Lift that raises the runways 80 inches off the floor, perfect for my shop as it allows full use of the floor space.  Has mech. safetys which have never given any trouble.
Also, I recommend you buy the hydraulic rail-jack. It's handy as a crutch and sure beats any other method of lifting the car off of the runway for wheel service, etc.

All our best to Leoni and you.  Hope the family is well.  Are we gonna see you next month?

Re: My new shed

Years ago I ran hard air lines through my shop and put drops in 5 locations, plus an overhead airline reel for my lift and a dedicated drop for my blast cabinet.  I used 1/2" copper pipe.  It was only like $/9 per 10' stick a the time and I already knew how to sweat joints.  Total cost for all the material was maybe $220.  To date, other than replacing the occasional quick connector that leaks and having to replace the cheap straps I used in some areas its works perfectly.  The best part is that I now only need an air hose that is about 10-15' long to access any point in my shop.  No long hoses dragging on the floor and getting filthy.  I've even got a drop to the pad outside so I don't need to leave the door open if I'm working outside.  I put some ball valves in strategic locations so if I ever have to work on one part of the system I don't need to shut the whole thing down.  One of the better investments I've made in the shop over the years.

If you've got that much space I'd just get a 2 post lift and permanently mount it.  Heck you could do a 4 post also if you want both options.  I bought my 2 post used for $1,500 from a body shop that closed.  Looks like it was barely even used.  14' and 12,000lb capacity.  Lifts my 7,800lb F250 with ease.  I have my neighbors old 4 post also, but still haven't found the time to assemble it.

Re: My new shed

TKOPerformance - with your setup using copper tubing, did you have any moisture problems in the air lines?

In my experience there's always moisture in air lines, so no more so than when I had a bunch of long hoses dragging all over the place.  I do have a dessicant dryer before my blast cabinet.  Otherwise I just try and drain the compressor every so often.  One day I may try a system dryer, but that's like project 1,200 on my list of projects.  Worth noting I don't shoot paint.  If I did I'd definitely look at something to keep moisture and oil out of the guns.  All the air tools seem to work just fine so long as you keep them oiled.  Water can't get to anything because there's a film of oil in the way, so it tends to just pass right through the tool.

Really nice Barry! Beats the hell out of my 16' x 16' shed I'm building, with upstairs, to put my tractor and attachments in. Hope you and Leoni are well. Take care!

Re: My new shed

Thanks guys. I was real impressed with Steve Gray's shop in Glen Rose. If the shed works out half as good, I'll be happy.
At this stage, only a world wide pandemic will stop me from being there ... in a rental.
I did try to find a Kia Stinger, no luck.
Walt, I'll miss catchin up with you and Brenda, give her a hug from us.

John, there's not a lot of need for heat in the hottest state in the country. I didn't pay the ridiculous amount for the insulation option, with roller doors, it's a bit like tryin ta AC a hay barn.

BB, I'da thought that a jacking rail was mandatory. I've only got 3 air tools, 2 of which.were only used once for a specific job. I really only need a coupla inflation points and at a work bench, butt ... I'm really likin the idea of a blast cabinet, and a screw compressor,(used), to run it easily. I'll look again for a hoist with manual release. I'll see you and Jean real soon, can't wait.

.And Sal ,,,  I'll post a pic when the windows, doors and roof are done.

I heard that Steve Gray’s shop is almost as big as the Great Wall.

Re: My new shed

That is going to be a super nice shop!

My lift has mechanically actuated locks. I prefer that type over one that requires air.  Any air cylinders will collect moisture and, if not used daily, might have a tendency to seize up over time.
Be sure you get the high lift that goes up to almost 7’ clear.

Very Nice!  I've been debating for years to build a shed.  Should of done it when it was a little more affordable.

If you are okay with steel the market is probably going to crater here soon, so prices for those building may come down.

I've been looking at the steel sheds.  They have come down quite a bit lately.  I was looking at a 50x30.
