Where Goes Motortrend?

I'm surprised that there has not been a thread here about Motortrend TV.  They have stopped all production, gotten rid of all production stuff - facilities, equipment, actors, & staff.  Anything new you see was already in the can.  That is why you are not seeing new episodes of your favorite shows.  I have no idea why and solicit any info you guys might have on the subject.

Investment banking buyouts rarely end up well for the customers. I'm surprised Holley has lasted this long.

Re: Where Goes Motortrend?

I'm hoping someone picks it up and brings it back.  Sadly I suspect they'll just play reruns and let it phase out.  Hot Rod garage just finished recording their last episode.

Re: Where Goes Motortrend?

It sounds like they will no longer be creating content directly.  The production studios are closing, but the channel isn't ceasing broadcast and there are a couple shows already in production at outside studios.  Eh, honestly most of the stuff on there was crap anyway.  It was a new medium for what magazines used to be; a vehicle for advertisers to sell products.  I can do without all the fake drama anyway.  They could just rerun Wheeler Dealers and a couple other shows forever and I think I'd be fine with it.

I agree with your sentiments.  The only shows I watched on it were Wheeler Dealers, Full Custom Garage and the World Endurance Challenge races.  Still, when Discovery merged them in even the WEC stuff wasn't being made available.  I nagged them with emails until the races finally appeared.  I have no idea if those will continue on there.

After the merger, I was pretty peeved, since the email announcing the incorporation into Discovery stated that I'd still be able to watch all of my favorite programs after MT+ was merged with Discovery.  I guess it was true but they neglected to mention that only previously broadcast programs would be available.

There are a few Youtube videos out there (from Freiburger, Hot Rod Garage, ...) explaining what happened.  Some of the creators of the MT+ programs have their own Youtube channels and are posting new content periodically.  I like Ian Rousell's channel and frequently watch it.

Re: Where Goes Motortrend?

Ian’s Full Custom is the best show out there!  I don’t always agree with what he does, but I love his methods.

I agree about all the fake drama other shows have. And, how many experts have I watched assemble engines where they forget to put the block plate on before the flywheel?

But, still beats non-car-related reruns that fill all the other channels.

You could always watch Tim Allen’s new show “ShiftingGears” with   phoney canned laughter and tried and failed situations.

Agree. Sometimes you just want some car related content. Even just to fall off to sleep. I would rather have a crappy car-related piece than most any other crap. Kid I really like on YT is Simon Fordman. His not showing his own mug and never talking is a great point of difference. In freezing-yer--oh no I used a word I shouldn't have- off Minnesota the kid gets -oh no I used a word I shouldn't have- done.

He only has 170k subs but this vidya has over 6 million views.

I really enjoy M539 Restorations too.  He mainly works on BMWs but shows his work and presents it in an entertaining manner.  I Do Cars is kind of fun too.  He runs a salvage yard in St. Louis and tears down different engines on his channel.

He sure knows how to create great video content.  I bet he has more time in creating that video than working on the car.

Re: Where Goes Motortrend?

I enjoyed the show JDM Legends a lot.  Pretty much a two man shop working exclusively on classic Japanese cars (mostly Dautsun/Nissan).  No real drama, they followed the restorations/restifications from start to finish, and I got to see some cool old cars I otherwise probably never would have.

Re: Where Goes Motortrend?

I guess I'm the odd one here, I liked Iron Resurrection, Bitchin Rides, Graveyard Carz and Fantomworks.  I even occasionally watched the guy from Texas that mainly rebuilt trucks of all sizes and an occasional car.  I know those deadlines were all scripted but still enjoyed seeing all of the mods and how they did them.
I'm going to miss those shows.

Iron Resurrection has a team a really, really skilled guys.  Joe Martin is an incredible metal worker, and Shorty an awesome body man (his show was pretty good too).  They used a lot of manual transmissions on that show too, which I liked.  I generally liked the style in which they did vehicles too.  Nothing was over the top.  The builds were beautiful in their simplicity and attention to detail.  The wheels also tended to be appropriate an tasteful.

Graveyard Cars was okay,  I did like seeing a shop 100% dedicated to restoration instead of just modifying everything.

Fantomworks was too full of manufactured drama for me.  I did like all the different types of cars they worked on.  They even did a boat one time.

Texas Metal was interesting too.  As far as chassis work goes that guy Bill is a genius.  I've seen a lot of poorly done lifted trucks over the years and his stuff was always well thought out and executed.  Great fab skills and welding demonstrated on that show too.

Re: Where Goes Motortrend?

Anybody watch the Mecum auction or Barret Jackson !?? Pretty stuff........
Guyz....we're setting on $$$$$ worth of classic cars (thanks to those yo-yo's)
Personally I think they have done more to RUIN the market for classic cars than help it.

Yeah, every now and then I will watch a bit or one of them.  I don't think what we see there is really indicative of the actual classic car market.  Sure, prices have definitely gone up, but then so has the price of everything.  I remember when a perfect fastback cost $12k, but then gas was also less than $1/gallon.  The cars have seemingly outpaced inflation, but not that drastically.  I actually watched some this past weekend and a lot of stuff didn't sell.  Maybe the market is softening.  It does go through cycles.

Re: Where Goes Motortrend?

Jerry Seinfeld's 1969 Porsche 917K from the movie LeMans didn't sell. High big was only $25 mil.

Re: Where Goes Motortrend?

I've just started watching Roadworthy Rescues and been enjoying it.  I like Custom Carolina also.

Re: Where Goes Motortrend?

I generally like Roadworthy Rescues too, but it frustrates me when someone knows the right way to do things and then does them wrong anyway.  He points it out in jest, but it makes me think about all the young and impressionable budding car folks out there watching it thinking that if he does it it must be okay.

I enjoy Roadworthy Rescues also, and agree with some of the actions he does that may impact 'less knowledgeable' people to try the same.  Although the position taken on Roadkill seems more extreme … especially considering that they typically have a van following them, and a TV crew to assist.

I like his Dry Humor and when the old parts go a flying out the engine bay.  His wife seems pretty cool too to actually come out and help him.

The thing that gets me with Roadkill is that they never paint anything and never need to worry about rust repair.  Must be nice, but it's not reality for those of us that live in like 40 of the 50 states.  I do enjoy Frieberger though.  I read his stuff for years when I was younger, so he probably helped form some of my opinions about stuff.
